Haven't been seriously looking yet, but hoping I might meet potential roommates at the ASW. Browsing craigslist tells me the furnished one bedrooms and studios in my price range (under $1000) are either far from the school or else in awful shape/not very nice. Better options for a split 2 or 3 bedroom it seems.
This is very correct. Unless you absolutely want to be on your own and money isn't really an issue, you're much better off renting a large apartment (or even a house) with a bunch of roommates.

Also: furnished apartments suck. The furniture is invariably crap. There's an Ikea in New Haven, and a decent second-hand furniture market on craigslist. You're here for three years, it may be worth investing a few $ in decent living conditions.
I'll keep that in mind. Was thinking of commuting from New York after my first year or so, so it might not be worth the hassle in my particular case.
Have you talked to anyone who's commuted from NY? It'd be like a $40/4hr round trip ride every time no?

There's an unlimited pass for $495. My spouse will be living in New York, so it'll still be slightly cheaper overall compared to renting two places, especially if I would have otherwise planned on purchasing single-use trips to visit New York on weekends. I'd use the commute to catch up on reading and such, so the time factor isn't a killer per se.

Nothing is set in stone, but I've talked to a few people who do/did the commute and it didn't seem like a major hinderance. But who knows, maybe we'll decide the commute isn't feasible and I'll end up staying in New Haven.
Makes sense, and a 2hr commute is annoying but not insane, especially since you'd be able to do work on the road (my current work commute in LA is 3 hrs round trip). Yale also has free shuttles from the train station to campus.

The shuttles are good to know - I did the walk to and from the station a few months ago, and I could see it how it might be a little sketchy late at night.
Yea the shuttle is definitely the way to go. Right across the trian station. There's even an app for it

You know, I have never taken the shuttle. I have found the walk down Orange Street (merging onto State), is perfectly safe, even late at night. I would download the app though, as the nighttime blue route (the one to union) is a bit odd. BTW, also, keep an eye on State Street Station when booking tickets. Not as many trains run through it, but it's extremely convenient.

Sorry to jump in here uninvited, but I would avoid commuting from NYC at all cost 1L year. After 1L it is much more reasonable, and people do it. But I don't know a single person who commuted in this year's 1L class, although many people go to the city on Fridays. So much of 1L life is spontaneous and unplanned, and you would miss so much of that commuting. Plus, you'll likely have one class that meets at either 8:15 or 8:20 AM. Also, 1L is full of events (parties at professor's homes) that go late, which again you'll be partially excluded from. Obviously you have to weigh the cost, but I cannot imagine not living in NH 1L year.

Same here. I'm almost concerned it's a mistake.

Did you receive an email that contained your financial aid award? Or is this a letter we should be expecting?

There was an email.

I'm relatively happy with my award, about what I expected. It really helps that new haven is so cheap
