What sort of summer jobs do 1Ls get? What factors made you enjoy your first year? I'm assuming there's nothing I can do this summer to prepare, but please let me know if that assumption isn't correct. Thanks for offering to answer questions!

how were the relationships among your 1l class, have you gotten some close friends?
did you join any groups or just focus on grades?
how competitive is cornell? cutthroat or more chill? how difficult is it to get top 10%?
how much is the workload, did you have a life outside of school?
do professors engage with students outside of class and build relationships?
does the school assist you in job hunting for 1l summer internship positions?
does the school, in general, give you individual support in your career goals (career counseling)?
how brutal was the winter?

i apologize if i asked way too many questions
Sorry for the delay!

The 1L class is really close. There's about 200 people in the 1L class. I'd guesstimate that around 40 of those people are antisocial/don't really do things outside of school. The other 160 people all have close friends. I'm personally extremely social so I'd say I'm at least casually friends with ~100 out of those 160 people.

Cornell isn't competitive at all. I'm not sure what you mean by "how difficult is it to get to the top 10%" - that's about 20 people, so I'd say pretty damn hard. Top 10% is 3.75 this semester, so that means getting some As and some A-s. In most classes, the top 10-15% of people will get As. So yeah - pretty hard. That being said, I think it's doable.

Workload is what you make of it. I know people who say that all they do is read supplements/reread cases/try to compile their class and book notes into an outline throughout the semester. But honestly, I put in 3-4 hours of work a day. That's it. I ended up doing extremely well. I won't disclose how well just because I know some of my classmates at Cornell know who I am on this forum (ugh you guys - get out of here with your nosiness lol).

Generally speaking, professors engage with you if you want them to. If you go to their office hours, some of them will talk your ear off. One of the 1L professors, Professor Clopton, volunteers to take his students out for coffee. Other professors - like Heise - do not want to see their students outside of class at all.

I didn't get any assistance with job hunting. I found my own. But you'll get emails and stuff encouraging you to apply for things. Some opps will even be at Cornell - research and clinics and stuff.

I got some individual support re: career stuff. I reached out to someone in career services and asked for support with a firm interview, so she sat with me for about 2 hours and conducted a mock interview, as well as answered any questions I had. I love career services, honestly.

I didn't think the winter was bad at all, but I'm from the north. If you're from the south, you might have a harder time.

Hey! Sorry for the delay. I'd suggest reading Getting to Maybe. It talks about exam writing, which imho, is extremely important to understand even before coming to law school.

I'd say about 20 people or so work at firms (that's 10% of the class). 20 or so people (another 10%) do in-house (e.g. legal work for a corporation). Another 10% or so probably do research at Cornell. And the rest do public interest work.

In case anyone puts stock in these types of things, Above the Law's 2017 rankings are out, and they bumped Cornell from #10 to #8! Woo!

Here's the article with the rankings and an explanation of their methodology if anyone is unfamiliar.

Hey,
yes, they emailed me and I got it.
Yes, I actually had paid for it already, I was going to take it regardless. I have been doing a lot of OT at work.
If they haven't emailed you, you should send them a note asking. After all you have a right to an answer since you submitted an application.
Let me know what happens and PM so we can talk about you'd like to do.
Also, best of luck, stay positive :)

We established that Ithaca is cold, you can get clerkships from Cornell, Tycho has some secret studying advice, and you don't need to get a physical.

Only a portion of the class gets it.
