I'm by no means a lock here, but it's nice to separate the status checker anxiety in the other thread from the other anxieties here. Has anyone started looking at housing?

I have been researching apartment complexes and I have come up with the following list of complexes in University City and Center City. There are a lot more, but this is a start. Hope this helps!

Evo
Riverloft
Chestnut Hall
Radian
The Left Bank
3601 Market Street
3737 Chestnut
3939 Chestnut

Just reserved a 1BR here. It's super nice and close to the law school. Definitely pricey, but for anyone who can afford it, I'd highly recommend it.

I'm going to go down to Philly on a weekend sometime soon to check out a bunch of the buildings. I want to see them in person before I commit to one. Did you visit it beforehand?

My mom lives in the area and went to check it out for me. She had nothing but good things to say. It's a brand new building (i.e. there's a good chance you'll be the first tenant to live in any given apartment) with great common areas, a pretty decent gym, modern amenities, you name it. If you want to visit, I think you'll definitely have to schedule one.

Here's a video of what most of the 1BR apartments look like (warning: the guy is annoying) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Xn8GwfOn4

Most of those buildings are huge residential very profitable buildings and are overpriced compared to what else you can find in the same neighborhood if you're willing to go without say a doorman or a gym. For instance, 1L I had a 2 bedroom to myself for $1100 6 blocks from the school west, and 2L I had a nice 1br in Rittenhouse square for 1200. Not saying your wrong for taking the easy route and staying in a bigger building if you can swing it, but there's savings to be had for those who are concerned too, those prices aren't representative of the actual rental market in philly.

I absolutely agree. I definitely looked around and found some really great places, much cheaper, with a lot of bang for the buck.

This is not Penn-specific - when do most people make deposits on apartments? I'm okay to wait until mid-late March, correct? I have stuff to put together between the SO moving and scholarship, but I want to be sure I'm not too far behind the eight-ball.

I will be! Other schools' regional receptions seem to be sit down dinners with talks from the dean, but Penn's sounds like it will just be an open bar at a hotel. At least that's my impression.
i'll be at the NY reception: anybody else?

Nah you're fine. Honestly it depends on what type of place you're looking for too. If you're going to deposit thIs far out it's almost certainly to a big building with a rental office. Those places you can rent now, or wait and rent later unless their full which I don't think actually happens outside the marketing hype pressure to rent now. But you'll get access to regular people housing by waiting too. Small building owners with 3 units, Craig's list specials etc aren't booking a year in advance, they find themselves with vacancies and want to fill it asap.
