Anyone know about the no-fridge/microwave policy in Gropius housing? Thoughts on bringing them anyway?

Fridges are allowed and almost everyone has them (also PM me if you want to buy one, I moved off campus but never sold mine). Microwaves are banned. I think some people have them, but I would be really hesitant about it because the fire alarms are pretty sensitive. I had a coffee maker and an electric kettle in my room and it was fine, though.

I know slow cookers are banned, but can I get away with bringing one to my room in Gropius anyway?

Probably as long as you were careful to not cook things that could smoke! Literally no one will ever check or care as long as you don't set off the fire alarms.

What would you consider an acceptable used textbook? Asking because there are a lot of textbooks that are listed as having substantial highlighting, etc. Would you consider that an impediment? Should I buy the slightly more expensive case books that have only minimal highlighting?

Thanks in advance! Trying to buy these within the next week.

ETA: Meant to post this in the Ask a Harvard Law student thread, but feel free to respond if you have some advice!

This is totally a personal thing. I tend to not even "see" the preexisting highlights as I read. But I don't highlight myself. I could see how existing highlighting could be a bother to someone who did, and I know others who can't stand it. No one here is going to be able to tell you if highlighting will bother you, though...

That said, I'm usually more concerned about structural integrity (the spine, for example) and whether there is damage (water//coffee, etc.).

No nerves! Only excitement.

(Says the girl who is awake at 3am reading one of those 1L guides. Did you know you should arrive at class on time? Did you?!)

In defense of the book, it's tradition for some 1L professors to be overly harsh about tardiness.

Yeah. For example, if you have Glenn Cohen and are late go home...

The book has been insightful, for the most part. I feel the amount of space dedicated to the importance of timeliness was perhaps unnecessary. But I'm also an old. Although, even when I was a young, I still made sure to arrive at my graduate seminars on time.

Stilettos clack too loudly to get away with slipping into class late. (Sneakers are for sneaking?)

Remember how I purported to have preferences when it came to a book's condition? Not anymore LOL. Doesn't H allot only $650 of your budget to casebooks / school supplies? Gross underestimation, if you ask me.

For anyone who hasn't bought their books yet or just didn't know, Coop membership (costs $1) gets you 10% off books you buy from the bookstore, including used/rental copies. Works for buying them online as well.
