By when did you have all of your grades?
I had received my first grade a few days prior, so I had all my grades in doctrinal courses by the early evening of the equivalent of tomorrow. I have no memory of when I received my LPW/legal research credits, which really don't matter.

Yes, somewhere at the low end of B+ (for the 1L curve). 55-65% get a B+ or above, 35-45% get a B or below.

Are you out of the running for clerkships (either District or COA) if your first semester is at median? If you raise your gpa significantly the second semester and get good recs are you back in the ball game?

Any idea what the percentile is for A- average? I guess that's a 3.66

For the curve in a particular class: Grades of A+, A, and A- are 25-30% of the grades issued. (There's a link to the document listing the 1L curve on the right side of the Lawnet page where you check your grades.)

For the GPA curve/class rank: This is probably more than you were asking for, but here goes. There are two conceptual ways to extrapolate from the grade curve for a given class to the GPA/class rank curve: (1) assume that grades are perfectly dependent on each other, or in other words that a person's grade in one class exactly predicts their GPA (you get the same grade in every class); or (2) assume that grades are perfectly independent of each other, or in other words that a person's grade in one class has no statistical relation to their GPA (grade assignments from one class to another are statistically unrelated). If grades were perfectly dependent variables, then a 3.67 GPA would put you in the GPA curve exactly where an A- would put you in a class curve (25-30th percentile). If grades were perfectly independent variables, then three A-'s in three fall 1L classes would put you in the top (30%*30%*30%)=2.7th percentile.

Obviously, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Both of the estimations above are probably so far from the truth that they provide no useful estimate. (Though, presuming that there is no inverse correlation between grade in any class and GPA, the estimates above are upper and lower bounds on where a 3.67 could possibly put you after three classes.)

Turning to information that's actually useful: The GPA cut-off for Stone honors is 3.41, and roughly 30% of the 1L class gets Stone. The cut-off for Kent honors (ignoring the whole "nothing lower than a B and more than half A's" thing) is 3.80, and roughly 3% of the 1L class gets Kent.

The
Bash-City wrote:old thread
linked above lists the percentiles that result from these two data points plus an assumption that the GPA distribution is normal, which is probably at least close to true. But keep in mind that while a GPA of 3.67 may put you in the top ~10% at the end of 1L year, it almost certainly doesn't put you that high right now with only three grades. The curve will spread out considerably after second semester, and a GPA above median is statistically more likely to go down than to stay the same or go up.

I believe Stone is closer to top 35-40%.

Could be. I don't really know where that old thread got their numbers for top 3% Kent and top 30% Stone. The law school doesn't publicly release numbers or a list of recipients as far as I've seen.

Bach-City wrote:...reversion to the mean for GPAs.
Presuming that there is an element of grading which is unrelated to intelligence, study, and preparation (which there surely is, be it idiosyncratic professor preferences, luck in getting a prompt you know well, etc.), then for a given student, we would expect that a GPA based on 7 grades would be closer to the population mean than a GPA based on 3 grades. The consequence being that if your GPA is above the mean right now, and you asked me to bet on where it will be after next semester, I should bet "lower" and not "higher." That's just speaking statistically though, so while the analysis is at least a little bit right (because grades aren't deterministic), I don't have any data to say whether its only a little bit right or almost completely right. You may very well be correct that first semester grades are a pretty good predictor of second semester grades, and overall GPA tends to say the same. Conversely, first semester could be no predictor at all of second semester grades, or there could even be an inverse correlation (high first semester grades are correlated with low second semester grades). But, I suspect that the reality is closest to your hypothesis.

Your comment does also make me realize that part of what I said before is wrong:
fastrun wrote:The curve will spread out considerably after second semester, and a GPA above median is statistically more likely to go down than to stay the same or go up.
I'm pretty sure I still stand by the second clause, but the first clause is dead wrong. There's no reason to think that the GPA curve will change shape after second semester grades are added, because the grading curve for classes is the same. Actually, there's a small reason, and it's the opposite of what I implied before: the mean will skew a bit higher for 1Ls because we're now in an elective, which is graded on a more lenient curve.

You'll need more than one semester of strong grades for clerkships after a median fall 1L.
