When are you quitting your full-time job for school?

Post by tuxedocat » Thu Mar 19, 2015 6:51 pm

Hey everyone, I was looking at this thread and thought it would be interesting to hear everyone's plans this year. So have you set a date? Do your coworkers/boss already know you're leaving (and/or applying to law school)? How long have you been working?

I'll start off: I've been working full-time for three years (in grad school before that) and I'm thinking of setting July 15 as my last day. In my head I keep pushing it further and further back though. Like, maybe July 1 so I can have a couple weeks in Chicago before I move in mid-July? I think originally I was thinking sometime in August for my last day, so if I keep pushing it back at this rate then I'll end up quitting in like May

Until last week only one coworker knew about me applying to law school, but it's getting hard to keep the secret. But I work in consulting so I'm reliant on billable hours, which means I don't want people to panic and stop giving me work until I know 100% what's happening. It's really, really hard not telling people, especially since I spend so many hours with them.

End of May (Friday 29th).

I am literally counting down the days (crossing them out on a calendar, hah!)

My whole office knows that I am leaving, and my boss has been incredibly supportive (wrote me a letter of recommendation).

My job isn't actually too important/ critical for the function of the office, so I am kind of coasting it in.

Seriously though - only 9 more weeks! YESSSS!!!!!

End of July. My boss and the entire office are very supportive (I work at a law firm so it's like I've had my own little lawyer cheering squad of throughout the process).

If I'm staying in the same city I'm currently in the firm would keep me on and just shift me to a law clerk position.

My SO is quitting end of June so she can start looking for work across the country and wrap some things up here.

As late in July as I can if moving to another state. If staying in this area, then I'm just switching to Part-time.

Late June so I can have a month and a half to travel a bit (hopefully) and work on some music projects. Can't come fast enough!

It's going to come down to the wire for me. I would like to leave in early July so we'll have time to buy a house, find the kids a school/daycare, and give my wife some time to find a job. Just waiting on a response from the SEO internship to decide if I'll need to be gone by May...

What, no love for those of us who will be working our full-time jobs straight through?

Upside:
Continue to get paid
Benefits (really helpful when you are the primary support for your family)

Downside:
Takes longer to complete
Will miss the little things, like sleep....

I'm a freelancer, so I've stopped looking for new gigs and should wrap up the current gigs by mid-June. After that, I'll hang with family, travel and read.

Mid-July, gives me time to spend a week with my family before moving. I've only been working there since mid-December (December college grad), but all my co-workers know and have been really supportive.

Also, I don't know how I got lucky enough to get a full-time job I like for only eight months.

I actually was originally planning to go part-time but ended up feeling like I would have too much trouble balancing it (and would be impossible with my current job). It seems insanely intense. You have my respect, sir/madam/other. But boy the "continue to get paid" part would be nice.

July 1! Work knows I'm leaving and need to have my replacement in then for training, which I'm happy about because otherwise I would have probably done the lame responsible thing and kept working for the extra $$. Could not be more excited for a month and a half off 8)

July 31st. Then a week to pack & say goodbye, a week of vacation, a few days with family, and finally a few days to find a place to live before orientation starts. That last part is a little scary, but at least my SO won't start work 'till a few weeks after school starts for me, which adds a decent amount of wiggle room.

You're not looking for an apartment until August? Oh man, I would lose my shit. You are brave.

Beginning of May... but only because I have to get surgery done and need time recover before school. When are most people looking to move?

Hope your surgery goes well.
I'm looking to move in August but I applied online for an apartment owned by the university (they say they will get back to me within a month before my move in date)

Can't wait to quit so that I'll have enough time to read the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn you so heartily recommend.
It'll make you love America like you should
