I also attended UNLV admitted student day and they are in my top 3. I am from California. I was already going for March Madness anyway so that weekend worked out perfectly. For me UNLV makes the most financial sense right now. They offered a half scholarship and I'm hoping for a fellowship for the other half. The tuition and COL is a lot cheaper than most other schools especially those in Cali. I am really interested in their education clinic and i feel like if i put in extra leg work I could ultimately come back to California. Further, they are the only ABA law school in the state which makes availability of summer work more likely hence less competition. Lastly, i also like the large university with small class size.Pequod wrote:Okay, I'm really not trolling here. What exactly appeals to you guys about UNLV? Is it because you are from NV? Financially the cheapest option? Something about the program? I am trying to seriously consider staying in state... but am having a hard time loving the idea. What are your reasons?

My reasons for wanting to go to unlv are pretty similar. I am also from California and the school appeals to me for pretty much the exact same reasons as described by msald002- cost of living, smaller class sizes, the only law school in the state etc. I was also offered a full tuition scholarship. Honestly with the way the legal market is currently I'm seeing a free legal education in a different state as being my golden ticket out of dealing with the problems graduates are dealing with in California.
I also love the desert and have am definitely interested in going somewhere new. Vegas seems like a good mix of small town and big city for me.
Definitely in my top 3 at the moment.

Not here to bash UNLV but to be realistic, its going to be hard to get jobs out of state. Definitely initially. UNLV is pretty good if you want to stay in Vegas, but it will be a very limiting degree outside of the state. I am a vegas local, grew up here. I have no desire to stay in Vegas so I didn't even consider applying to UNLV.
I have heard law firms are very home selecting with UNLV in vegas, and in some instances have hired UNLV grads over the IVY league. just know that the lack of mobility does exist and california is very competitive, with the top schools in the region ( USC UCLA Stanford Berkeley) and even the lower tiered ones will be looked at more favorably than UNLV.

Honestly, the way I see it is by weighing the worst case scenarios for my particular situation. I have options in CA but with very little offered money. Either i can stay in CA and take on 175k+ worth of loans and have a chance to be unemployed but be close to family. Or i can be maybe 60k or less in debt in Nevada and be unemployed And find a decent job that will allow me to pay down my debt and start over (med school anyone? Lol). But maybe I'm pessimistic.

I'm looking forward to starting school at Boyd this fall. I am a touch concerned that there hasn't been much networking with the rest of my incoming class. Other schools that I hadn't even committed to sent me an invite to a Facebook group. Not that it really matters but I would like to network. If you are planning on Boyd this fall please feel free to reach out to me.
