HOUSING and LIVING IN NYC

Morningside Heights is a safe, relatively quiet neighborhood on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The law school buildings are clustered on the east side of the main campus, on 116th street and Amsterdam Avenue. There are a few small grocery stores in the neighborhood.
University housing options include the following:

Lenfest Hall: https://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions ... ng/lenfest
Lionsgate, 520 West 112th Street: https://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions ... /lionsgate
West 115th and 116th Streets: https://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions ... ng/115-116
University Apartment Housing: https://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions ... ousing/uah

Although NYC is always expensive, the housing is highly subsidized and University rental rates are well below market rates. You can find information on University Housing rental rates here: http://facilities.columbia.edu/housing/ ... odations-0

Where to eat around Morningside Heights: http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/09/ ... s-nyc.html

There are a few bars in the area, but in general the best nightlife in New York is farther downtown (an easy subway ride away).

The 1 line (a major subway line that runs the length of Manhattan) stops across the street from campus and provides fast, cheap access to much of the city. There is absolutely no need for the average student to have a car in Manhattan, and parking is inconvenient and expensive. Except for in extenuating circumstances, you probably should not bring a car.

If you decide you must bring a car, you can park on the street cheaply, but that requires frequently moving the car to new spots because of street cleanings and other restrictions. Further, street parking in NYC is a great way to dent or scratch your car. You can find information about indoor parking garages in the area here: http://www.columbia.edu/about_columbia/parking.html

Comparing with NYU currently ^^ --no financial aid from anywhere yet so it feels premature to be making a decision.

Checking in -- mildly disappointed that I didn't receive a Hamilton or Butler, so I doubt I'll be able to justify Columbia over the Dillard, but I'll wait and see what happens :)

Postage and prestige are directly proportional.

Okay, I have to say that I have spent more time than normal running my hand along the outside of the Columbia Admitted Student Guide.

"What is that, velvet?"

Well played Columbia...well played.

Hey all - 1L at CLS here dropping by to say congrats to all of you! Columbia is really an awesome place; I couldn't be happier with my decision, and I really feel like there's no better law school out there.

Anyway, feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions, or to post on the Columbia 1L(s) taking questions thread (which is currently a bunch of 1Ls asking things of upperclassmen, so we clearly need more questions from you guys).

And again, congratulations - you've made it :)

Anybody else get their massive blue box of Columbia supplemental materials today? It's quite impressive (and heavy).

What's in the blue box? The velvet bound book?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
