Re: Texas Class of 2018
Hey y'all. I've been (desperately) looking for housing. I've found a few places I like in North Campus but, according to google maps, they range from about a 7-10 minute drive to and from the law school. That drive doesn't sound too daunting but Austin is notorious for bad traffic. What do y'all think? Should I look for a place even closer or no? Thanks!

If you're talking about the neighborhood that includes Duval and Speedway, the 7-10 minute drive would be the same pretty much any time of day. Duval and Speedway are TCR for commuting to campus.

Great. Thanks!BVest wrote:If you're talking about the neighborhood that includes Duval and Speedway, the 7-10 minute drive would be the same pretty much any time of day. Duval and Speedway are TCR for commuting to campus.
Another question: I just paid my seat deposit. I want to submit my letter of intent asap. Have you all already received the email for submitting that?

Yes. They sent an e-mail about 2 weeks ago with a deadline of June 5. However, I signed mine in November. You'd better hurry up before they change their mind!celvreal wrote:Great. Re: Texas Class of 2018
For anyone who doesn't feel like deciphering that grid of every class offered next fall, I put together the schedule for 1Ls for fall of 2015.
The entire 1L class is split into 4 sections (1, 2, 3, and 4), and from there you'll have two classes with your large section, one small sized class with 1/3 of your section (example: section 1(A), 1(B), and 1(C)), and LRW with an even smaller section (1/4 of your section, example 1(1), 1(2), 1(3), and 1(4) -- this will be your mentor group, but you'll learn what that means later).
Hopefully I didn't make too many mistakes while lifting the info from the website and putting it here, and also I'm sure this schedule comes with a "we may change this at any time" warning from UT itself. But this should give you a decent idea of what type of hours in class and hours of down-time you can expect during fall 1L.

Re: Texas Class of 2018
Hi everyone,
Im coming from New York and was hoping someone could advise me about housing? I was wondering what the best place would be to live for a student in the law school. Specific building or locations would be greatly appreciated. Im looking for a nice place that is close to school.
Thanks! Look forward to meeting all of you...

Can you elaborate a bit on your housing requirements? Are you looking for a place by yourself, or are you looking for roommates? What is your budget?

Sure. I'm looking for a one bedroom by myself, budget is around 1000. ThanksEarthdogFred wrote:Can you elaborate a bit on your housing requirements? Are you looking for a place by yourself, or are you looking for roommates? What is your budget?

I like the North Campus area, which is roughly the area circumscribed by Dean Keeton, Guadalupe, 38th and I35. Driving to class is a fantasy. There's no parking. Anything in this area will be an easy <10 minute bike or bus ride (your UT ID gets you free rides on metro transit [excluding MetroRail]).

I've showed my UT ID before to the person checking for tickets and they said that's fine, is this a recent change?EarthdogFred wrote:(your UT ID gets you free rides on metro transit [excluding MetroRail]).

No, apparently I was incorrect. I thought I read that last year on the capmetro website, but I just checked and metrorail is indeed free for UT students. The train is pretty sweet--good AC, free wifi. With that in mind, you folks looking for apartments should check out the area near Crestview Station*. Black Star Co-op has some fantastic beers.BigZuck wrote:I've showed my UT ID before to the person checking for tickets and they said that's fine, is this a recent change?EarthdogFred wrote:(your UT ID gets you free rides on metro transit [excluding MetroRail]).
*It's not the fanciest area of town, but there are some gems, including a pretty fantastic Korean karaoke place a block south.

Yeah, the train is, or at least was, supposed to be free for students/faculty/staff per UT PTS office.
(not that it goes anywhere useful).

Re: Texas Class of 2018
If you live near a station, and thus don't need to drive and, most importantly, park to get on it, it's a pretty nice way to get downtown or to campus. They have campus connect buses that run from MLK to Dean Keeton every (I'm again shooting from the hip, here) 7 minutes.BVest wrote:Yeah, the train is, or at least was, supposed to be free for students/faculty/staff per UT PTS office.

Re: Texas Class of 2018
Usually that bus is every half hour or so I think. It's tied to the train. Wait for the train to come, take those people to campus. Loop back to train station. Repeat.EarthdogFred wrote:If you live near a station, and thus don't need to drive and, most importantly, park to get on it, it's a pretty nice way to get downtown or to campus. If you live on or close to the line it's a great way to go downtown or east 6th for drinks. Maybe an ok way to commute to school or if you work downtown. That's about it. I love the train but I can understand frustrations with how limited it is.

Re: Texas Class of 2018
My brother took it from Far West to campus for 3 years (40-45 minute ride), and he said it was about as on time as could be reasonably expected. He was content with it.Hikkomorist wrote:Does anyone have experience with the UT shuttle? Does it usually run on time?

Re: Texas Class of 2018
From my experience it usually runs on time in so far as it comes by in the stated intervals. So if it comes by every 20 minutes then it comes by every 20 minutesHikkomorist wrote:Does anyone have experience with the UT shuttle? Does it usually run on time?
But not in so far as "It arrives at this exact bus stop at exactly 4:23." It could be 4:23. Or 4:19. Or 4:29. Etc.
