Re: Texas Class of 2018
if anyone is looking for an apartment for next year in north campus area I'm looking to get rid of my lease (not because it's a bad apartment). One bed/bath less than a ten minute walk to the school; badass balcony; quiet; close walking distance to a few chill bars/restaurants. PM me if you'd like more deets/pics.

West of Lamar, probably?IsThisForReal wrote:At what point do you hit west instead of "west campus"?Attax wrote:A few things to consider:
Housing around campus, definitely look into the Cherrywood neighborhood for houses. North campus/Hyde Park is nice, but often going to be more expensive and more UGs than family neighborhoods.
You'll want to avoid west campus, just trust me.
Living a bit away is fine, just go W/E not N/S unless you want to double or triple your commute time. Austin has one of the worst commutes in the nation, so don't do that to yourself 1L year (or ever, really). East is kind of sketchy, west is nice, but there are good places east as well. I wouldn't live more north than 51st or more south than 15th/Enfield.
Avoid Riverside/Oltorf area. It has been doing some nice things recently, but still isn't the best part of town.

Yeah once you hit Lamar you're for sure out of it.

+1 to the crucial distinction between an east/west commute vs. a north/south. I went to UT for undergrad and traffic is a legitimate quality of life issue here. If you live anywhere south of the river, or north of 183, you're going to have a bad time.
ETA: Some would even lower that northern boundary to 45th or so, but I live around 53rd, and it's not terrible. I wouldn't want to be much further north, though, and commutes get significantly worse every year.

My two cents is that being in walking/short biking distance is pretty killer for 1L. Prices are not bad in north Campus and, outside of maybe two or three frat houses that are essentially right across from campus, it's a quiet, comfortable area.

I really enjoyed being within close distance. I'm paying pretty fair rent at my place, a little more expensive than being far, but worth it.Ron Don Volante wrote:My two cents is that being in walking/short biking distance is pretty killer for 1L. Also, West campus ends at Lamar as Ron and others have said.

I would disagree on the northern limits people here have set. I've lived north of Koenig between Lamar and Burnet for a decade now. It still takes me just 15 minutes to campus and 20 to the capitol area in traffic.
Also worth noting, West Campus also has a northern limit... probably around 29th/30th. North of there is a ton calmer.

Re: Texas Class of 2018
Hi everyone. 3L here. Thought I'd chime in with some thoughts on things y'all have been discussing.
1. Dogs
Are awesome. I have 2. Had one in 1L (got the other as a 2L) and it was honestly not a problem. Kept me sane and forced me to at least go for a walk everyday, which was nice. I lived close enough (about 7-8 minute drive) that I would go home in between classes to let him out in the backyard and we'd play fetch a while. It was great. I highly recommend a dog. Other people may of course have different experiences, but for me, sometimes my pup 1L year was an awesome study buddy.
2. Housing
I definitely second whoever said that an east/west commute is much better than a north/south commute. Any commute that requires you to take either I-35 or Mo-Pac will be a disaster. Don't do it. I lived only one mile down I-35 from campus as an undergraduate and between the hours of 7-9:30am and 4 - 7pm you're looking at an hour sitting in traffic. Now, I live in a house on the east side about 3 miles east of campus and it never takes me more than 10 minutes to get to school. It's a 3 bedroom, 1 bath. I pay $1500 (I'm married, which makes this doable).

Nowhere south of 183 requires getting on either of those parking lots.emkay625 wrote: I definitely second whoever said that an east/west commute is much better than a north/south commute. Any commute that requires you to take either I-35 or Mo-Pac will be a disaster
I'll agree with people about not commuting from the south though. Crossing the river ranges from routinely aggravating to nigh impossible. I've had faster border crossings.

Anyone know how UT feels about bringing a guest to some events obviously I wouldn't want to tourture my SO with super boring stuff but he wants to go cause he is giving up everything to move there if I decide to attend.

I'm pretty sure the events listed for Thursday are for guests as well. Friday says students only though.MtnGinger wrote:Anyone know how UT feels about bringing a guest to some events obviously I wouldn't want to tourture my SO with super boring stuff but he wants to go cause he is giving up everything to move there if I decide to attend.

And I think generally, SO is different from a KJD bringing their parents?bizzy531 wrote:I'm pretty sure the events listed for Thursday are for guests as well. Got a merit scholarship email yesterday after being admitted 2/20. It's not a huge offer, but considering Texas tuition is ~$20,000 less than my top schools, it's nothing to sneeze at.

Just registered for ASW so excited. Doing the 12pm segway tour and the 3pm law school tour. We should all meet up. Also if anyone has hotel suggestions that are close and cheap I'd appreciate it. The Holiday Inn seems nice but since it'll cost a lot to fly I'd like to keep costs to a minimum.

Have you tried AirBNB instead of a Hotel? It's great if you're comfortable with the concept!

The Rodeway Inn and the Days Inn are both close and cheap, but that's absolutely all there is working in their favor. (Well, the Days Inn has Star Seeds Cafe, so that's another plus, but still... it has reviews like this and the Rodeway Inn actually warrants fewer stars).
The Doubletree at I-35 and MLK is not walking distance (well, it is, but it's about a mile walk), but it's a decent midrange.

Are the 10 minute financial advising sessions helpful? Or would it be just as easy to email their financial department with any questions?
