I always thought of anything north of Baltimore, south of Chestnut and east of 45th as being pretty good.
South of Chestnut is credited. Anything along the Baltimore corridor will be pretty good further up than 45th. I'd feel comfortable living south of Baltimore (say, to Chester) at least as far west as 45th, personally--some parts of Squirrel Hill are even fancy--but there's nothing wrong with playing it safe. I hope it goes without saying that you've got to have street smarts wherever you live--not to knock on Philly specifically, but it is a place where desperate people and people who don't know how to put their iPhones away do intersect.

The only problem with West Philly is that Trader Joe's is on the other side of the river :(
You make great points. The street smarts thing couldn't be more right...I can remember unfortunate folks having incidents on Locust Walk even because they were too careless.

Only other consideration when you push too far west is the walk to campus. If you're going to the law school, it can be a hike depending on where you live. But maybe Penn has some new fancy transport services that aren't SEPTA.

I've done septa from Baltimore in the 40s to the Penn stops. Septa trolley can suck if there's too much snow on the ground. Very quick and reliable otherwise. Talking less than ten minutes on the trolley not including a short walk to the law school.

Poll is up. I can change it if you all think certain other options need to be included and if any of the current ones are unnecessary. Ive listed like 5 different neighborhoods in Center City itself, so if you think I can take out some of those options and put some better ones in let me know.

Checking in!

Will be living in South Jersey (house + wife + kids) so commuting in. On the plus side, feel free to come over for some home cooking!

So excited for September!

I had the opposite reflex. I thought they realized their mistake! Still can't believe I got in.
my thoughts precisely.

also, i *will* be at Penn, and there are some others here who will be too, regardless of schollies. so the housing thing is totally cool. also, i asked for the poll, so i have to support my original idea

I just got a Silvernman-Rodin scholarship invitation to apply. It says there are at least 2 given out each year, does anyone know how many people are invited to apply? And if the anything other than your essay is considered after being invited. Also does this mean I am no longer in the running for getting invited to the Levy Scholarship?

Any information would be really useful, cannot find much with my quick look online.

Same. Happy because I'm lucky to have gotten it, but expecting big need money at YHS and already have the Butler so debating whether I even send the essay...

Levy invite. That 4/15 deadline is indeed frustrating.

Congrats to everyone with invites today!
