Transferring MBE from CA to DC

Post by patentlawgeek » Fri May 18, 2018 10:35 pm

Hi folks,

Just found out that I didn't pass the California Bar Exam, for the second time :( While I am devastated, I want to know what kind of options I have in terms of getting licensed elsewhere while maybe taking the CA bar again...especially since I am practicing patent law, CA bar is not a must.

Has anyone transferred his score to DC to be licensed? If so, approximately how much was the overall cost and how long was the process time? Any advice or recommendation will be appreciated!

I think you can only transfer the MBE if you passed the exam...

Hi, you can transfer your MBE score from a failing bar exam so long as the MBE score is over 133.
Go to NCBE to get the score transferred to DC.

I'm doing this and will be sitting for just the MEE/MPT this July. Good luck!

You might want to send an email (or call) both California and DC board of examiners to check on the procedure.

For some states, the MBE can only be transferred directly from the state and not through NCBE.

how do I know what my raw MBE score is? If I get more than 1330 of scaled MBE, it means I got more than 133?

You need to order your score. They'll give you a report. While you can transfer your MBE score, I think you also need to have a passing score on an essay portion of the exam. Double-check, but I am pretty sure you cannot waive into D.C. on MBE alone. You'll have to take the essay portion in D.C.

You don't waive in with MBE alone. You just have to do the essay portion--one day of DC bar exam and use the MBE score from the other state.
