Re: THEMIS JULY 2018 - DISCUSSION
I would agree. I think doing complete essays for practice is a luxury and not the best use of one's time. You'd be better off issue spotting, maybe jotting down some dot points, etc, and then making sure to read/understand/memorize the model answers. We all know how to write. Just make sure you IRAC and you'll be fine.CBlaw wrote:to be honest i do not see the point of doing the MEE essays. I mean you should know how to write an essay by now with 3 years of law school under your belt. In my opinion it seems people just lose points on essays because they are not spotting the issues not b/c they dont know how to write essays. I have basically stopped writing essays (MEE) and instead just issue spot. Thats how i save a bunch of time.sproutz wrote:In addition to not reading the big outline sections (I just skim them to get a sense of the key concepts), I have started saving time by outlining rather than writing out the practice essays. At first, I was spending about 2 hours on each one: one hour to write out the whole thing, and then one hour to review it and pick out the helpful rule statements. Now, I am spending max one hour on each one: 30 minutes to read and outline, 30 minutes to review the model answer and make a couple of notes.studying4bar wrote:So...I think I need to cut something out of the program or I am focusing on far too much detail which is resulting in wasted time. I'm at 25% as of right now, should be 26 by the end of the day. I am at 1.6% a day which is manageable but that is if I rely solely on themis for prep. I have been trying to make my own mini outlines and or visual aids but I find I spend so much time on Themis stuff that I am pretty shot by the time I get around to making my own materials/reviewing/doing extra practice (because property destroyed me). Any suggestions?
I wonder what other people think of saving time here to try and get caught up. I figure getting through more essays in less depth is better than simulating exam conditions, but not getting to as many? Once I'm caught up, I can probably slow down again, but I'm also currently just spending all my time trying to keep my head above water with Themis tasks.

yeah once you're done the lectures, I would focus on MBE practice and memorization (eg from your own notes, or using flash cards, etc). I wouldn't spend much time on essays (other than to issue spot and make sure your answers are consistent with the model answers), nor would I spend much time on MPTs. I also never did the readings or the 'review outlines' at the end of each subject. I just did the lectures. So yeah, there's a lot of fat in there that you can trim if time is an issue.studying4bar wrote:So...I think I need to cut something out of the program or I am focusing on far too much detail which is resulting in wasted time. Thank you so much for this really helpful advice! That does make sense, cutting out a large portion of the practice essays and focusing on issue spotting and familiarity with fact patterns is more useful..I already know how to IRAC. If I do a practice anything, it will be an MPT because I can do a great MPT - in 2 hours. An hour and a half? Yeah, struggling there.

Exactly. yeah I often just typed a random letter into the essay box to generate the model answer, which I copied/pasted into a word doc, then edited/printed/highlighted and saved it in my notes for later. I usually didn't write the essay. As for the MPT, yeah maybe a good idea to practice a couple if you're having trouble getting your time down!studying4bar wrote:Neilt001 wrote:yeah once you're done the lectures, I would focus on MBE practice and memorization (eg from your own notes, or using flash cards, etc). Not sure if anyone has seen the Quimbee flashcards yet: https://www.quimbee.com/flashcards. I just tried them and I actually really liked how they work. They offer you a really short, answerable piece of a concept and then you rate how well you knew if from 1-5. Then they used spaced repetition to help you get all of the concepts up to 5. I probably won't use them a ton, but they will be nice for refreshing topics that I've already studied so that they don't get stale. Also, I think they're free? But my school pays for regular Quimbee access, so maybe that's just why they were free for me.

I looked into them and they look great, but it's 25/month for the package that contains it. I even emailed them and asked if they could make them available by themselves since I don't need the outlines, case briefs, practice exams, etc. They told me that people use those for bar prep and I should too.
I already bought Critical Pass so I'm hesitant to spend $50 for 2 months of flashcards.

I use them when I am burned out. I don't know how Critical Pass is, but when I am completely exhausted from studying, usually I'll either sit in bath with the phone or in bed and just review those cards. But that could probably be done with Critical pass too. I liked the flash cards tho.airylef wrote:Yeah, I think that's just your school.sproutz wrote:Not sure if anyone has seen the Quimbee flashcards yet: https://www.quimbee.com/flashcards. I'm really struggling with Critical Pass. There is just so much on the damn flashcards that it's extremely overwhelming, and it's difficult to know exactly what they're asking. Yup. He doesn't follow the outline that closely, and sometimes phrases things in a different way than the blanks set-up. There are a bunch of a/an mismatches because of this.frqw9201 wrote:IS it just me or is the Elward evidence lecture all over the place and doesnt match well with the handout?

If you look at lecture 5, the beginning matches nothing with the outline.

For example, from the civil procedure deck:
"What is the difference between subject-matter and personal jurisdiction?"
"What is original jurisdiction?"
"At what time during a federal case can a party challenge subject-matter jurisdiction?"

Haha. I am at 36% and don't feel great, but not worried (yet). I think it all starts to come to you later in the process. Still have lots of time to review the most important topics/subjects once we are done being introduced to every single subject.Lawworld19 wrote:At 47.1 % complete and I ill tell you, I do not feel good about things. Makes the whole process more interesting when you are working full time and your offer letter contains language that states if you dont pass you are immediately terminated hahahah

I asked my older cousin who used themis in 2016 and he was surprised when I was griping about him, so he asked me to show him so I hopped on the app and apparently he is a new lecturer for them, or relatively new because he hung onto some of his stuff and he just texted me that Schott - the guy that did family law - is who he had and he didn't have any problems understanding him

Ah... I am going to ask my cousin if he has an outline or something from the other guy because...this one has me questioning the phrasing and the quality of that lecture and it doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Fortunately, I get hearsay. Unfortunately, I do not remember much about testimonial evidence and some other (from what we have been told) tested areas.dabigchina wrote:Great.
