I'm going to sign up on the earlier side (also so I can scope out the application to put more info in the OP). They just recommend that you don't wait to sign up until the last day in case the website gets overloaded.

And YES welcome to the Themis/iPad club, sesto! Good luck with the NYLE (and Sprout too)!

Just finished the application - I opened it to take a peek and it was really easy, so I just decided to get it done today. All you really need is your law school transcript and a credit card! It's a $250 fee for J.D. applicants, plus an extra $100 that you'll pay to ExamSoft later when you download the exam software (assuming you choose to use a laptop).

My BOLE account references November registration. Should I still sign up?

Even though the BOLE account is still referencing the November 16 application period, when you click on the link, it does specify you are applying for the July 2017 bar exam. From that point onwards, it also references July 2017. Suspect they will update the first link in the BOLE account tomorrow.

Also, you can pay using a debit card, as long as your card is visa debit or MasterCard debit.

After registering, does the BOLE account update to reflect that you've registered like it does for the NYLE? I registered by clicking the link on BOLE's homepage and not the one on my account b/c it said November registration and I had same concern as the person a few posts above.

I think they're still going through and updating all of the November/February references to say April/July. I wouldn't worry about it.

FormerChild - it's not showing up on my BOLE account yet but I did get the confirmation email. I'm assuming it'll show up on there at some point before the exam.

It isn't showing up in your BOLE account yet (if you're registered for July) and it will still say November, but if you were to click on the link again and try and sign up (again), it will say you've already signed up for July and will give you details - in a nutshell, don't worry that it still says November. If you received the confirming email, all is good.

Hey everyone! Checking in.

I'm out of state and know that our location options are basically Albany or Buffalo (I've also heard these are better because less hectic than being in the city FWIW). Does anyone know if you are able to get whichever of those two locations you want fairly easily or is it still a bit of a race to get one over the other?

I don't really have a preference but I'm wondering because of the hotel situation. Hotels in both Albany and Buffalo near the testing sites are already booking up. Do people just book refundable rooms in both locations and then cancel once they know where they will be? Do they book in just one location and just hope that's what they are able to get? Or do most people wait until after they already know their location to book?

It looks like hotels do book up really quickly, so I would definitely recommend booking in at least one of those cities beforehand (or doing refundable hotels in both). Based on the past couple of threads, it doesn't look like Albany and Buffalo book up too quickly, so if you select your location the day the email goes out you should be good - you could probably get by with just pre-booking in one city.

June 15th over here.... :(
I would take it in Sept. No reason to take the NYLE during bar prep. If you take it in Sep, you will get your results prior to your UBE results anyway, so it does not delay anything.

The only thing to keep in mind for the NYLE is that you have to finish watching the videos in order to register for the exam, and the deadline is a month before the exam date. If you think you'll be burnt out after the bar (or are immediately leaving on a bar trip), September could be a little tricky. Still probably beats trying to do the NYLE during bar study though!

I got it done last month and can say that you do not need to study. You don't even need to pay much attention to the videos. You should just skim the outline a couple of times and be ready to control-F your way through the outline for two hours.

Also Themis just announced a 100% pass rate for the NY bar at my school (of the people who completed 75% of the course - I think one person who didn't hit the 75% mark failed it or didn't report back). I'm feeling pretty good about my choice of bar course! We can do this, everyone.

(And Barbri folks always do great anyways since you guys set the curve, so no worries there either.)

I took the NYLE about 20 days after the bar. It was fine and I agree, little preparation work is needed.

Haven't done the NYLC yet and I'll also be taking the NYLE after the bar. How long does it take to get through the NYLC? Might just knock that out of the way this weekend, or should you do the NYLC closer to the exam date of the NYLE?

NYL Course is about 15 hours, if you get every question correct during the videos. They give you questions throughout the videos that you must answer. If you get a question wrong, the video will go back to the part where the lecturer was discussing information regarding the question. You can not skip or speed up the video. Some people on TLS found a way to speed up the video but got caught and had to redo the course.

The NYLC course is due about a month before registration, doing it now or close to the NYLE makes no difference. You won't remember anything anyway. For the course and the exam, just use the 140ish page outline and control f. The only benefit of completing the course after the UBE instead of before is preventing confusing. Remember, NY law is different than "UBE" law, so you will learn one thing during the NYL course and a different thing while preparing for the UBE.

Bolded - why I didn't take the march one. Going to take it in June. I know I could google this but approx how long does it take to "watch the lectures" required? Most of my friends haven't done it yet. Probably will stream them during stupid classes to make sure I finish it all before May

Thank you again Slytherpuff you are a fountain of knowledge - much appreciated.

Edit:

At what point do we need to submit proof of our pro bono hours? Is that part still required to be submitted by April 30th?

Edit again - I promise I can read. I'm just useless right now. TYIA.

I did the nylc during my 3l year last april when it first came out and took nyle in may '16. Nylc took me about a week to finish, but I did a few lectures a day and was taking relaxing 3l courses with no work or exams so nylc was like all I did lol

there are "progress Qs" in the lectures like you have to answer the Q correctly before you move onto the next segment of the lecture or you have to repeat that segment (from what I remember).

Both nylc and nyle exam were not too difficult to complete, you'll be okay!

There are 15 hours' worth of videos for the NYLC, but it took me more like 18 hours (maybe a little more) to get the course done. They break the videos into 20ish minute segments with a question at the end, and if you get the question wrong you have to go back and re-watch the video. (It starts you near the part where the question is answered, but sometimes this is at the beginning of the video and you still can't skip to the end.) I actually missed a lot of questions because the answer would be something the presenter said, not something that was reflected in the actual law you see in the outline. I'd budget 20 hours to be safe (if you just have the videos on in the background like I did), or 16-17 if you pay attention to everything that is said in the videos.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
