Section H is winning. Spencer will blow your mind as a small section Civpro prof. Geis will be awesome until he decides not to be. I haven't personally had Harmon or Buck, but Johnston will minimally entertain the entire class regularly because his crotchety is off the charts.

ETA: This is in no way a comment on any of the other professors, but my experience is limited, and there is a healthy range of awesome-->ugh in the list of 1L profs.

E and H look great at first glance. Lots of big names missing from the roster this year--Nelson, Coughlin, and Harrison notably. And nice to see Dean Mahoney back!

Agreed here. E and H are the best, with E maybe slightly edging it out, because it doesn't have a clear bad apple like H does. G is a runner up.

What are Nelson and Coughlin up to?

Nelson is teaching at Columbia for a semester. Not sure on Coughlin.

Go to it. It's worth your time, even if it just means meeting your classmates and getting yourself situated in the law school.

I would just go backpacking if you enjoy that more

at the end of the day you'll bond most with your section, and you may not even see them at the optional orientation

The drawback of E is that it has Alex Johnson. He's an acquired taste for a few and others absolutely despise him.

If you're an incoming 1L reading this post in August after discovering your section, don't let all this chatter phase you. I know people that like all the professors that were referenced negatively above, and I know people who can't stand the venerated. Don't worry about it; your section is fine.

This is really important. There are some generally more scary profs and others that are universally loved, but for a given student, you might gel with the prof seemingly everyone questions and those who end up disappointed by a fan favorite. The faculty at UVA is awesomely accommodating and foster a remarkable learning environment, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time.

Case in point: my two favorite professors from 1L were my two lowest grades. It sucks, but their ability to teach has nothing to do with my performance in their class.

I agree with your sentiment, but I have trouble believing someone "can't stand" Kendrick.

Knowing this won't be as useful as you think because people with high gpas may still have written on or been accepted through the Virginia plan. Also, I don't know that much about the new admittance rules but my understanding is that they may also complicate trying to find out the grade-on cut off.

Seems like those of you who are asking should toss out your GPAs, that way the people who are on VLR will be able to tell whether they wrote-on or graded on. If you have a 3.75 and someone chimes in saying they got on VLR with a 3.74, that doesn't do much to clear things up unless you make your gpa public first.

I'm not sure how helpful this is but it was ~3.77 for the Class of 2017, when 25 people graded on instead of 15. That was considered an abnormally high cutoff. Most previous years it had been in the low 3.7's.

I bought a lot of my furniture last summer here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/216063258498780/

If that link doesn't work for you, it's the "Free & For Sale" group for the main campus. You'll need an @virginia.edu email to join though.

Are you looking to buy new or used? Mrs. F gave a good suggestion if you're looking for the used furniture market (which is honestly the better call since this furniture will likely be temporary as a law student). Otherwise, if you're looking for nicer, newer, longer-lasting furniture your best bets are Grand Furniture on 29 or Haverty's on I-64.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
