Seriously though, I probably would prefer that it doesn't lean too fratty. On the spectrum of nerdy to fratty, I'm probably closer to the nerdy end.

Really I would be satisfied with some social events for law students once in a while, and groups of friends that like to go out and do things on the weekend at least semi-regularly. After thinking about it a little more, I said "party hard", but on a wild night I usually end up having a few drinks and heading home by 12 or 1, as opposed to getting smashed at a club or a house party until 3am, so maybe Penn's social life is sufficient and UVA's is a bit more than I need.

You'd fit in just fine here. Most people go out once or twice a week before crunch time. We like to have fun, but we're also not raging every weekend. I'd say most people are chill, nerdy-preppy types. Fratty, not so much.

I still know a contingent of 10-20 1Ls that are still going out at least 1x a week and it's ~3 weeks before the start of finals now. Hell, I'm probably going out this weekend since it's someone's 21st b-day.

And yea, we get waaaaaay too much (in a good way) free booze from the school, especially during orientation, which was absolutely glorious.

The law students are fun, although even the most outgoing and social ones seem to have their slight awkwardness/nerdiness about them so take that for what you will.

I was a toss up between UVA and Penn for a while as well, but I ended up here and although I haven't been to UVA so I can't say what it's really like, I'm pretty sure I made the right choice.

This does not apply to everyone. There are quite a few none awkward people, but they are not the most outgoing/social. Maybe that's why, they are normal.

Just an update, I asked because I was considering switching my ED app to Penn. I ended up leaving it where it is, though you all have convinced me I would've liked Penn very much. Sadly, Penn is probably out for me RD, so if my ED doesn't work I'll definitely be bummed about not getting to go to Penn.

Stay persistent (but not a creeper). I know someone who got in after they already moved in to their apartment at another law school and ended up breaking their lease.

This is all very interesting because I thought c/o 2013 was the shit, but the general consensus is that c/o 2014 are mad serious to the point of it being weird to even the administration.

Yah, I know we've all chilled the fuck out after OCI (at least, those people who got something did). I have no fucking idea why 1Ls would be conserned about getting summer jobs; its the T-14 equivalent of worrying about whether the sun is going to rise tomorrow.

I don't really like the atmosphere here this week. I went to my UG to study and it was a lot more relaxed.

I'm trying to get to where you guys are at, so I'd like all the experience I can get from any Penn students reading or posting in this thread.

1. What did you do for the LSAT to get your score? I'm looking for specifics. Did you do a 6 month prep, 3, 4 weeks? Was a course involved? Was a course and a tutor involved? Based off of your experience with preparing, what would you recommend?

2. Your LOR: Did you use professors, coaches from college, bosses, or all of them? Did you use any friends that are attorney's?

3. Essays: Did you do all of them?

4. Mistakes: Through the application process, did you make any? Any potholes I should be mindful of?


To give you some background, I'm from Philly, now residing in Ft. Lauderdale. I plan on returning home to attend law school. I miss home, my family/close friends, etc. I have just under a year to take the LSAT, and I'm preparing now. Next year is going to be a very busy one with preparation. I'm very determined to get into this program, and I'm literally willing to do whatever I have to; leave no stone unturned...

Hey, I was just accepted via ED and had a phone interview with the dean of admissions so I'll try to answer as best I can through my experiences.

1. For the LSAT, I didn't discover TLS until about a week before I took it so I didn't really prep to nearly the same extent that a lot of people do. I took the October 2011 test, and started studying in July when I took a Kaplan class that went until the middle of August. My diagnostic was a 152, and the class was decently helpful since I was in the mid 160's by the end of it. From there I just studied the 3 Powerscore Bibles pretty much every day and took a PT every weekend until the week of the test when I took a PT every day. So I ended up taking ~14 plus a lot of individual sections (probably enough to add up to another 5 PT's or so). I ended up scoring a point higher on the LSAT than on my best PT's (I hit 170 a few times but never did better, then got a 171 in October), so I guess it worked. I'm a naturally good test taker though, so I always had that advantage going for me.

2. I'm a senior in college now, and I had 1 from a professor and 1 from my boss of the job I had last summer. After having the phone interview with the dean, I highly recommend you have 2 from professors unless you've been out of school for a while, since she specifically asked why I decided to have 1 from my boss. FWIW my job had absolutely nothing to do with the law (I worked at a country club).

3. I did the 5 year plan one. I did ED so it wasn't quite as important I think, but I'm from the Philly suburbs and I wrote about how much I love Philly and would love to go to school there, and how Penn has done a lot to make University City a great place. On my phone interview the dean asked if I wanted to stay in Philly long-term, to which I answered yes. So I think that showing some love for Philly helped me a lot there.

4. Hm. I guess I would have gotten 2 LOR's from professors like I said above, but I can't think of anything else. At the end of the day it's 90% GPA and LSAT, so as long as you can get whatever LSAT score you need (for ED, it's basically 3.3+ GPA and 170+ LSAT or 3.8+ GPA and 165+ LSAT) you'll be good.

Very rarely. Seems they started last year, 2 ED people on here had them. AFAIK I was the only person on here or LSN to have one.

All I know is, I don't think it was any coincidence at all that a bunch of section 3 kids were playing flip cup at the goat after the civpro exam. I think section 3 definitely has the priorities correct.

I just used professors. I would have used friends who are attorneys, but I didn't have any.

Professor Wolff, while grilling me 1L year, once asked me literally to compose a Twombly/Mottley compliant complaint on the fly during Socratic Method. He is a very smart man and he's a nice and fair professor, but he does like to push the 1Ls a bit. I can't access any of his old tests anymore, but I'm sure some of the other Penn students in this thread can.

does anyone know when loans get disbursed for next semester?

I think loans get disbursed on either the 9th or the 13th, depending on when the school receives the loan from your lender

Disbursement is scheduled on 1/2 for all my loans. Then the thurs. after you will get your refund (if everything works normally).

You can see your date by going to PennInTouch, click on the "my loan requests" on the left, check the loan you want to see, then go in it and click disbursement info.
