How prestigious is the SEC?

Post by KME89 » Tue Jul 02, 2019 1:16 pm

I know years ago landing a legal externship with the SEC was prestigious back when they paid. Is it still viewed favorably by corp biglaw or has it dropped down in the list of favorable experiences? Also, does the office you're assigned to play a part in that level of prestige, for example CorpFin versus Trading and Markets?

BigLaw hiring at 2L OCI focuses primarily on law school and class rank/GPA. It is expected that candidates will have done legal work during their 1L summer, but firms don't really care about the specifics of that legal work (i.e., they don't really differentiate between doing public interest at a local advocacy group vs. the national ACLU, or working for the city government vs. the feds). Summering at the SEC - or doing a term-time internship there - is great and will absolutely not be looked down on by any firm.
