Contracts everyone at my school had CASENOTES- which was keyed to their book. Never had to open the text book.

I was reading elsewhere that some advise just using casenotes instead of reading the cases in the text book. They claim that this allows you to focus on the relevant issues for the case while saving time to read other material. Is this a good idea? Something that you would use in certain classes and not others?

One of the most important skills you're going to be learning is how to read a case and pull out the most important parts. I wouldn't take any shortcuts that would screw me on that lesson (especially seeing as upper-level classes probably won't have the same short-cuts and you'll have to pull it all together toot-sweet).

I used casenotes keyed to my author for contracts and it was my best grade. But since I had them I did not touch my casebook ever. However, its less to read, pulls out what is important, etc. and then you have more time to study for other classes and always grabbing a commercial outline from lexis or aspen from online, is usually helpful!

Good law school advise: ALWAYS MAKE YOUR OWN OUTLINE!

I did stop reading the book and only read Casenotes for one class, because I simply needed to cut a corner somewhere. Second semester was so crazy busy that I had to do something to alleviate the pressure. And it turned out fine, but I still don't think I'd recommend doing that more than occasionally. Certainly not if you want to feel really engaged in your classes. I skipped that class often and mainly taught myself the subject from Gilbert's, Casenotes, and flash cards. It was my lowest grade, but I was still ahead of the curve, so I can't complain. I sacrificed that one to do better overall.

You mention commercial outlines from lexis online, are these free?

Are there useful, free supplements we can obtain through Lexis or Westlaw? I don't have access to see what's available on either, yet.

I think you can get some free from lexis. However, I got a lot of commercial outlines from other classmates or other students I knew that were in law school. I am sure you can do the same. Probably even through this website

Yeah Harvard and Florida Coastal are learning the same things as all law schools. Some subjects may vary but not by much!

I bought some of these books, but never used them. At least in my experience, the professors and casebooks taught me all I needed to know.

The black letter outlines for Federal Income Tax is pretty good. I'd recommend that over any other.

I actually didn't use either of the Dressler ones you posted. Instead I used this one:

The first one you posted is most likely not the one people are talking about, because that is just a casebook. It wouldn't really be anymore helpful than your own casebook, and could end up confusing you more. So I would highly recommend not getting that one.

The second one you posted I haven't ever seen or heard of so I can't comment. But the one I used, and linked to above, I really liked.
