how is LARW graded? it says it's 0 units on DukeHub and grading says "CNC" (idk what that means)

But first semester assignments count for the grade you get second semester so can't blow it offdevilblue wrote:Credit/no credit for first semester, graded for 4.0 credits second semester

anything wrong with renting books through Amazon? we're not gonna need them after the first semester right? (aside from Legal Writing)

I've rented books via Amazon and I've never had a problem. I highly recommended it. However, if you are huge highlighter or take extensive margin notes then reconsider renting since Amazon is a stickler for markings in the text.

Just FYI I wasn't either... until law school. I'd buy used 1st semester and see how it goes before renting cause they really are sticklers and it'll cost you either (a) a lot of money when they reject your books or (b) better grade performance if you want to be highlighting but feel like you can't.

do the used books from the bookstore not have a lot of highlighting?devilblue wrote:Just FYI I wasn't either... until law school. That's gonna be book dependent. Generally not too much, but honestly first semester having some highlighting is good because it makes it easier to find the important parts of the cases.....

okay cool, the only books I rented were the case books for Contracts and Civil Procedure, would you recommend buying them used then?devilblue wrote:That's gonna be book dependent. I would recommend buying all of them used but I don't think it's a big deal if you rented em... personal preference. Probably overthinking it and nothing to worry about

Highly dependent on your goals and other options. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk in specifics enough to have a meaningful discussionNero21 wrote:New to this thread but just wanted your honest opinion. Do you think Duke Law is worth it at sticker ? (over 200K in loans)

Is softball optional or are all 1Ls expected to participate?

MANDATORY (jk)
This is secondhand but I believe everyone is put on a team (or technically small section is your team) but attendance and contribution is not required. 35 people is a pretty big social league team size so it probably shouldn't be a problem but personally id recommend at least attending the first couple (my opinion as someone who enjoys social soft/kickball leagues)

Does Duke have an old exam bank? How/where do you get practice exams?

There is no exam bank. Professors will put them online come mid-October or so. Some professors put a bunch, some put only 1 or 2.

also i wouldn't worry about even looking at a practice exam until about beginning of november. IMO, looking at one can only do more harm than good at this point during 1L

Some will, some wont. My first semester, I didn't have a single old exam provided to review amongst my three classes.TheBlueDevil wrote:But they'll all provide at least one eventually?devilblue wrote:There is no exam bank. You dont. Do sample exams online and outline. But other professors exams are usually useless for another professor.TheBlueDevil wrote:So what did you do in terms of exam prep?sparkytrainer wrote:Some will, some wont.
