Are you guys already done with offer, acceptance, consideration, estoppel, repudiation?
Our section is the weird one. In K's, we started with damages, then went through offer and acceptance, then contract interpretation. In Torts, our professor last year didn't make it to intentional torts. In Crim, god knows what is going on in Crim. I'm officially in love with our Civ Pro professor, though. He explained Twombly using an elaborate analogy with controlling a flywheel driven by a steam engine. System dynamics FTW!

Do the NU students who came straight from UG have amazing softs, amazing #'s, or a combo of the two?

I know 2 straight out of UGs. One must have pretty good numbers (she got into CLS). The other, I'm not sure, but he doesn't have amazing softs.

I agree with Ray ... the two that I know both have strong numbers and present themselves very well (assuming that one's numbers are on par, I think that the interview will be critical coming directly from undergrad).

I am friends with 2 1L's enrolled in the JD/PhD program. They have already completed 2 years in their respective subject areas. Placement is a much trickier question as there are just not enough people currently on this track. My understanding is that both are looking to clerk, work for a few years, and then begin teaching shortly thereafter. Others are welcome to chime in.

I don't get this question. Why hit on NU law girls, who are not impressed by the "I go to NU law" line? Why eliminate from the equation what is, honestly speaking, likely your strongest comparative advantage in the marketplace?

The credited Q is: tell me about DePaul undergrad women...

This is true.....Depaul women are fucking hot.

but are NU ugs hot?
Yes. I was up there for a concert last week. NU UG is very fratty, though, which can be good or bad depending on your proclivities.
Rayiner and animalcrackers and others, thanks for this thread. It's been very helpful. At first I was leery about applying to NW because I had a bad experience in Chicago (first job out of college, got laid off after 6 months and just had a bad time overall, probably from having to get to work by 5 am 50% of the time), but I didn't know NW had such a great location, and the WE thing seems like a really great idea (if the average MBA age is 27 months, why doesn't law school emphasize WE as well?
Anyways, I can vouch for Depaul girls being hot. The few times I passed by their gym (sample is biased) I think I saw 5 girls that were just drop dead gorgeous. As for NU Law girls not falling for the 'I go to NU law', who cares, smart girls are even hotter.
Anyways, thanks again, and thanks to Animal Crackers for her application help guide, NU or NW or whatever the abbreviation is now one of my top choices if I do better on Dec's LSAT (cross fingers).

I don't mean this to be a silly question, but it does matter a little to me as someone raised by hippie/beach bum types.

I'd like to ask your impressions of how Radcliffy Northwestern is in comparison with other top schools?

Is it the type of place where you're going to be looked down upon for not having an outward appearance/attitude that screams old money?

To what extent is that unavoidable at top schools in the first place?

I've never heard of the stereotype that Northwestern is more blueblood than any other top law school. It's the most diverse T14 ethnically and geographically, so it really seems like it wouldn't fit the picture.

This appears to me to be a case of undergrad stereotypes being confused with graduate schools. Happens a lot with U Chicago too. Northwestern UNDERGRAD has a reputation of being about as blue-bloody as any school in the midwest... Now whether or not that's actually true, I can't say... I have a feeling that perhaps it's over-exaggerated based upon Northwestern's location. The undergrad campus is in Evanston, just spitting distance from some of the wealthiest suburbs of Chicago - Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe, Highland Park, etc....

It's true that the law school is basically situated smack dab next to the wealthiest neighborhood in the city, but that doesn't mean the students that go there are silver spoon babies. I can't say that there is anyone I know in this school who strikes me as a rich snob. Everyone is pretty normal and people are from all over the place. Plus, the fact that most of the students trend older and have had jobs for years after school means it's really hard to even figure out what type of background a person may have had growing up...

I went to Northwestern Undergrad, and I think it's about as "blue blood" as any other highly ranked private school. Personally, I do not come from such ranks and were friends with pretty diverse individuals. Not sure how that compares to the law school.

I have another quick question, which may seem kind of silly, but how do you pronounce Professor Shapo's name? Is it a short "a" or long "a"? Thanks :)

I didn't have Shapo, but as far as I'm aware it's "Shap" like "map"

Do many students live near school or out further in the city? Depending if my g.Aunt can sell/rent her townhome in rogers park, I may be able to squat there. Is being a 35 minutes away from campus a big pain? If I can't squat there rent free, can anyone recommend nearby high rises?

I would say that the majority of 1L's live within walking distance of school. Rayiner and I both live in McClurg. In terms of high-rises on the lower end, both McClurg and Onterie are attractive options as they are within 2 blocks of the school.

Do you have a car? Like chadwick said, a good number of 1Ls live in Streeterville (the neighborhood right next to the law school). I personally live in Lakeview on the Northside. I drive into school every morning and it's about a 5-10minute trip with no traffic, and 20-30 minutes during rush hour.

So, the basic answer is, living away from the school is doable, but easier if you have a car. NU gives you a U-pass which is unlimited transit on the CTA (buses & trains) but while taking the bus / El and walking the few short blocks to school is a breeze in the warmer months, it can be a huuuuuuuuge pain during the winter....

Then again, rent in the city (either in Streeterville or other places on the North side) is expensive. If you can somehow swing a rent free (or really cheap rent) gig, then that'll leave you with a lot more money to work with out of your budget...

Your background will probably be admired at NU. We heart "odd" backgrounds and accept conventional ones as well. One dude in my section who everyone adores says, when he's happy, that he can feel love, and another dude was a bike messenger forever before coming to NU. They're also probably two of the most respected, smartest members in my section.

Come to think of it, the only Radcliffey people in my section (exclusively) are in the JD-MBA program. But they're cool too. No one talks about money or flaunts wealth in my section, not sure how the other sections feel about that...

I had him. That's correct. If you have him, talk to me because there is a book you should read over the summer if you are a gunner like I am and like to be prepared for 1st semester.

35 minutes is no problem. I lived over an hour away for half of first semester, then I moved to Streeterville. Now I'm a 10 minute walk. 35 minutes is totally do-able. In fact it might keep you in gear in terms of staying at school in between classes to do work instead of slacking off and going to your nearby apartment to take breaks like me :)

And while the majority live near campus, its not a HUGE majority, its not like 90% anyway. I'd say probably more like 60%. At least in my section.

Is there student parking? My brother is a rehab facility across the street from the law school and I've been driving there after work from Lincoln Square and the drive isn't bad but parking is a problem it seems.

There is. You can buy a pass for something like $400 (for the academic year). I have one, but I can't remember how much exactly it was...
