Do you have a car? Like chadwick said, a good number of 1Ls live in Streeterville (the neighborhood right next to the law school). I personally live in Lakeview on the Northside. I drive into school every morning and it's about a 5-10minute trip with no traffic, and 20-30 minutes during rush hour.
So, the basic answer is, living away from the school is doable, but easier if you have a car. NU gives you a U-pass which is unlimited transit on the CTA (buses & trains) but while taking the bus / El and walking the few short blocks to school is a breeze in the warmer months, it can be a huuuuuuuuge pain during the winter....
Then again, rent in the city (either in Streeterville or other places on the North side) is expensive. If you can somehow swing a rent free (or really cheap rent) gig, then that'll leave you with a lot more money to work with out of your budget...
