So Regents ppl...

Just looked at the leasing app and realized that I cant answer any of the questions as I have only ever lived in University dorms/apartments. How hard is it to get a place in Regents??

It's not hard at all. I think they might have a special form that you fill out if you are a student. At ASW they will take you on a tour and explain everything, and if you plan to live there I would fill out your application then (it has a $50 app fee). If you aren't coming to ASW you can call them and I'm sure they will explain what you should do differently.

How much do I need to come to ASW? I have another commitment at home that I really cannot miss, but there's only the one ASW so I really don't want to miss that, either. Visiting campus another time isn't a problem, but I feel like I'll be missing a lot if I'm not there when everyone else is. Did any of you not go and wish you had? And to the ones who did go, do I need to attend if possible?

I didn't make it to ASW, but did visit for one of the "Day in the Life" days. I think ASW will be really fun but I wouldn't stress too much if you are going to miss it, though it is probably a good opportunity to meet potential roommates. I'm sure I would have had a good time at ASW but I don't really think I missed out on too much.

I agree with Emma (and I didn't go either).

There are some people here who met their roommates at ASW and some people who formed friendships over the weekend that seem to persist today, but I think anything you might be missing from ASW (meeting people, forced semi-uncomfortable social gatherings with complete strangers) you'll get during orientation.

Go if you can but don't sweat it if there's something else to do.

(Definitely plan a visit on ASW or otherwise.)

Depends on what you want to accomplish on your visit. I don't know why you would want to spend more than one day actually visiting the school though, unless you were coming to ASW where they have planned events and stuff.

But I'd say the flipside of this is that there is a lot more going on around here on a Thursday than a Friday, so if you want to be able to sit in on a range of classes and really get a feel for what it is like around here when things are in full swing, I'd recommend visiting for more than just the weekend if you can. Plus on a Thursday you can come to bar review!

I'd really try to make it for one of the Day in the Life days if you can't make ASW. I don't know what the schedule is like this year, but my Day in the Life was on a Wednesday.

In the fall quarter I think we all had plenty of time to go to the city at least once every weekend if we wanted, and probably more often than that (except arguably the last 2-3 weeks, but even then I'm not too sure). If you manage your time well there's no reason you can't go out every Friday and Saturday night.

I'm reserving judgment about winter quarter because I can't tell how "busy" I am compared to just not wanting to get out in the cold. 2/3Ls can weigh in here if they want but most of the 1Ls were told to get ready for nonstop school/hell during spring quarter.

Dixon did a week of feminist theory in Elements that I loved. There were definitely some people in class that weren't feeling it, but the reading she assigned combined with the lectures and discussions we had were awesome and illuminating.

Honestly... I enjoyed some of the activities, the faculty panel, attending a 1L class, etc., but socializing with other admitted students was a bit of a turn off. There were a ton of people who hadn't committed yet, and every conversation I had revolved around where I had been admitted and where I was going. It was an odd, somewhat competitive atmosphere. A lot of the people I met at ASW didn't even pick UChicago. So I would say, if you can make it, come, but if not, don't worry about it.

I try and get all of my work done by Saturday so I can spend all of Sunday out doing stuff, or at least relaxing not studying. I was able to stick to that schedule all quarter except while I was doing the Bigelow assignment, and the last week or two before classes ended.

Oh this makes me feel a lot better (as did the other posts!) Looks like I'll be coming to the last Day in the Life day. Will definitely be taking recommendations of what to see/do while there closer to then! So excited.

For active, I am going to assume that means bringing in lunch speakers, etc (most of the organizations on campus aren't "active" like you would think of an undergrad student organization but instead work to bring in speakers and have talks, etc.). The organization with the most lunch talks is the Federalist Society. There is also an active American Constitution Society, but Fed. Soc. has by far the most speakers brought in.

True, did forget about Wine Mess (which i completely recommend attending), although I think Fed. Soc. might do more than 1 event per week. Bar Review is also highly recommend unless of course you get stuck with the 8:30am Friday class.

I know that there are people doing them again this year, it sounds like they are a great opportunity if you are interested in them and OCS can help facilitate the trips. Other than that, unfortunately, I dont know much more.

I don't really think of Bar Review and Wine Mess as a student org, but I guess it is. Federalist Society probably had at least one talk a week in the fall, and several times more than one. I'm not sure why that leads to the particular emoticon you used, though, because more talks = more free lunches.

ACS had a few really interesting talks as well in the fall. Most organizations don't have the funding that the Federalist Society does, so they're limited to only do one or a few talks per year, unless they combine funds with another org for a talk that might have overlapping interests.

LSA is also pretty active. They have weekly meetings, help fund events that are put on by other organizations, and plan several parties and get togethers throughout the year. The Chicago Law Foundation holds a big charity auction every January (this Thursday) and so I imagine they're pretty active throughout the year organizing it, but I don't know what they actually do day-to-day. They also make and sell Chicago Law apparel throughout the year.

Greenbooks is an environmentalist student and they have used textbook sales a few times a year. The Edmund Burke Society is a (sarcastic, over-the-top) conservative/libertarian debate society that holds 3-4 debates every quarter. Neighbors is a community service organization that does volunteer work at a lot of neighborhood schools that includes things like tutoring, organizing drama activities and moot court, and a big essay-writing workshop for high school seniors applying for scholarships.

In sum: a lot of organizations are really active, but what it means to be "active" looks different for every group.

Since we are on the topic of student orgs, I thought I'd ask this question here first.

Anyone a member of the Dallin H. Oaks Law Society that could answer this? Is this organization affiliated with the J. Reuben Clark Law Society? My father has been involved with JRCLS and was chair for a term in the Salt Lake City chapter, so I personally have always been interested in it.

When's the latest we should be thinking about applying to live in Regents if we're still not 100% on Chicago (but like 95%)? Is it worth it to pay the app fee soon just in case we want to live there, even though I won't know until after my visit in late April?

Oh, and do y'all know anyone that lives in Windermere?
