Do we sign up for OCI as soon as we arrive in May? Will 2Ls have signed up already? Just trying to get a better sense of the entire OCI timeline for incoming AJDs from start to finish.

My apologies if this has been asked already.

First - something to keep in mind for IP is that not all degrees are equal. Right now I think it's mechanical engineering that's super sexy for employers.

For your questions: You sign up for OCI in July (I believe), it's definitely after you get your mid-summer grade from whatever course is being taught for the first 5 weeks. You sign up for OCI at the exact same time as other 2Ls. The way that it works is you have 2-3 weeks to bid on firms before the bids are "final" and everyones bids are submitted together at once. Where you actually have a disadvantage is that other 2Ls are able to start sending out resumes in June and July and you can't. That impacts you a lot in non Chicago/NYC markets.

Re: IP jobs

Electrical engineering is the best bet for job prospects. Computer science/engineering is 2nd. The markets for mechanical/biomedical/chemical degrees are moving, but slower. Biology (and to a lesser extent chemistry) jobs seem to strongly prefer PHD's or Masters. For what it's worth, I'm biomedical.

This is from my experience applying for patent agent (prosecution only) positions. The patent attorney market might be slightly different, but about 70% of the job postings in my market (DC) seem to be looking for EE or ECE.

Just to clarify my earlier comment re: IP jobs and talking to 2Ls who don't have jobs for the summer: I was talking about the 2L population in general and not just AJDs.

And I'm totally on board with Hart. Our statements aren't contradictory and I agree with him that jobs in IP are more plentiful. They're just not infinite.

Aware you all can effectively comparison shop, but some really good Southwest deals today on flights (depending on your location, e.g. Boston) over Open House weekend (here (LinkRemoved)).

No, nothing yet; however, did confirm over phone that all documentation was successfully received (NeedAccess via Admission Office; FAFSA via a separate financial aid number) - so ball's in their court.

Had a law-related interview this week where NU AJD was discussed. For what it's worth, there was definitely a positive response to the idea of the AJD program. There did seem to be a sense that traditional 3-year programs were somewhat wasteful.

Anyone hear back about fin aid yet? Also I don't think NU sent me anything confirming they got my need access form.

Mary Beth Busby sent an email on 2/21 telling us, among other things, to expect a tentative aid packages during the week of 3/3. Also, they do not send confirmation of receipt.

I'm having a tough time finding this: When is the summer semester tuition due? Or in other words, when is the next payment due after the tuition deposit?

This past year it was due after school started, on June 1.

Need a AJD Class of 2016 FB/LinkedIn group (not tech savvy enough to create/moderate) - general '16/'17 groups don't seem like appropriate fits.

I think the last couple of years the AJD Board has created a closed (invite only) FB group for each class. I'll follow up with the higher-ups to check status on this.

There is a "hidden" FB group with a little activity. I received an email a week or so ago with instructions for how to access the group. You may have received the same email, but if not, PM me and I'll pass along the instructions. (This sounds far more exotic than it is--I just don't want to post names in the thread)

Initial financial aid packages are scheduled to be released this week. I remember reading somewhere that ~40% of students receive grants and that the median grant is somewhere around $20,000. Anyone have reason to believe that NU will be generous with the AJD '16 group? I would love for NU to give me no reason to consider my local T14.

Use your other offers to negotiate if anything? I'm looking for 150k to consider NU.

Reminder:

'16 AJDs considering IP careers should register for the Patent Law Interview Program (PLIP, or AKA the Loyola Patent Fair). The registration deadline is TOMORROW, March 3. Spread the word. Let me know if you have questions here.

Yeah, my offer has to break 6 figures for me to consider NU. I really just don't like debt...
