Checking in. :D
Nice scholarship offer.
Waiting to hear back from other schools before making a decision, but wouldn't mind going to GW :P

I think I remember seeing on the ASW that if you matriculate to GW, they will give you back $150 (but no stipend otherwise).

It says on the ASW that "A reimbursement of up to $150.00 for travel expenses (airfare, train, busfare, car mileage) related to Preview events will be available upon matriculation in August. Please be sure to hold on to all receipts."

Admitted on 2/21. Excited! Any idea of when I might hear about scholarships? GWU would be a strong contender with some $$.

Oh hey! Long time no see. I am working for a labor agency of the California State Government. What about you? You are a federal clerk right? That sounds pretty crazy, what is it like?

Hey everyone,

Last year I was on these boards desperately seeking info and getting little more than speculation in return. I know I would have liked some inside knowledge on the school I was thinking of attending so if you guys have any questions at all let me know.

I should mention that I am in no way representing the school in an official capacity and that any opinions I have are my own. For instance, I think that Justice Thomas might just be the most constitutionally well-reasoned judge currently on the Court. I doubt GW, or even Thomas for that matter, would agree with me, but that's my opinion damn it.

I currently live in the Aston (1L housing) so I can give you info on that as well.

Literally any question that flutters across yer minds I'll gladly tackle. Why? Cause it's better than working on this draft appellate brief I should be working on.

Yup. Clerking. I'll PM you so as to not fill-up the pre-L thread. :D

Checking in as well :D Congrats to everybody! Doesn't look like the Facebook group is being managed at all - as far as I can see there are only two accepted members. Also, anybody going to the admitted students gathering in LA on March 4th?

Never mind about the Facebook group. The link on the first post of this thread links to the dead page I was talking about. Here's the link to the real group, for anyone who hasn't found it yet: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1413718918865714/

If you want cheap, you can all but forget DC, save having a place with a few other roommates. Your best bet will be Arlington or Alexandria, both of which offer metro commutes. Two metro lines go to GW, the orange and the blue. The orange goes through Arlington and the blue Alexandria.

Arlington would be your shortest commute. The Ballston station is an 11 minute metro ride to the Foggy Bottom/GW stop, and there are four more between the two that would be a few minutes less. A 1br in the Ballston/Clarendon/Rosslyn area will cost upwards of $1700, with basement apartments running a few hundred less. There are plenty within walking distance of a metro stop, which would make your overall commute 20 minutes give or take a few. These areas are pretty neat. Safe and relatively quiet but with lots of restaurants, shopping, and bars for all of those nights when you'll have hours of free time with no homework during 1L.....

Alexandria can be slightly cheaper, but also a longer commute. Pentagon City and Crystal city are just as close but also just as expensive. (11 minutes, 4 stops in between, and at least $1600 for a 1br). It gets cheaper as you get further away, especially after King Street, but that makes the commute quite a bit longer (20 minutes or more). There are also apartments that offer free shuttles to close metro stops but only during rush hour which makes it difficult if your class schedule isn't 8-5.

I live in Alexandria now and I've been looking for Arlington apartments for a while to relocate to when my lease runs out, so I know a good bit about the area if you want other specific details. I'd be happy to help out!

The Aston seems pretty nice, though it is pricey. Then again, it seems to me like everything in DC is, so I may just go with it.

From what I can gather it is all pricey. My main concern is budgeting to allow for summer months...

I live in the Aston, it is extremely pricey, and not much to show for it as far as the luxury amenities. Still it's really convenient to school, and you'll have a lot of instant social connections by living here. You can easily save a couple hundred bucks, and get a nicer place, though by looking around foggy bottom. However you pay no deposit here, utilities are included, and the cost is taken out of your loan before disbursement... making it easy to budget and safeguarding you. If you spend too much and go broke, at least you have a place to live. Also nice because your loan disbursement doesn't come until the first week of classes.

Arlington, specifically Rosslyn, Clarendon, Ballston, Pentagon City and Crystal City are all good alternatives if you're willing to take a 5-10 minute train ride. Hint for new house hunters... around here the prices quoted on apartment websites often bear no resemblance on the actual rental price. The place I just signed on to lease in May is 400 dollars cheaper than the list price... other places will tell you the cost is $400 more than list. Use padmapper.com to get a realistic idea of prices.

Check in. I'd like to go to GW though I feel like negotiating for more $$.
I am also interested in Aston. So the price on the website (around $17k/year) for Aston is for 10 moths or 12 moths? It looks like a great place to live but $1700/moth (assume it's 10 months) seems too pricy for me.

More expensive than that.... it's up to $18,700 as of this past year and it's for just a bit under 10 months... This year we had it from August 5th - May 24th. That does include utilities, cable and internet... but yeah pretty crazy expensive.
