Oh Definitely. I was just surprised it was that expensive to live within walking distance of the school. And it was just overall generally more expensive than I expected for the size of Nashville. Definitely a lower cost of living than some of the other schools I've looked at though, sheesh.JustHawkin wrote:I think it's really contingent on where you live in comparison to the school, yes?KatyMarie wrote:I ran the numbers with LS22's Cost of Attendance Comparison spreadsheet...I initially underestimated the cost of living in Nashville. Rent by itself would be so expensive.

Yeah, cost of living at these schools has been the biggest wakeup call I've had so far. Housing ain't cheap.

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2017!
I'm coming from an area where I pay about $400/month (all-inclusive with utilities) and the going rate for a typical "student" place is probably closer to the $350/month range per person. I know people splitting a house four ways with the total monthly payment around $1000. So yeah, definite wakeup call for me, too.El Principe wrote:Yeah, cost of living at these schools has been the biggest wakeup call I've had so far. Housing ain't cheap.

Ugh. Me too. I'm paying $400/month (plus utilities, but still). My budget/debt excel sheet makes me really sad.gta wrote:I'm coming from an area where I pay about $400/month (all-inclusive with utilities) and the going rate for a typical "student" place is probably closer to the $350/month range per person. Anyone find anything close to the law school (walking or biking distance) for anything less than 1,000/mo for a 1br? Just checked americana as it was listed in the obiter dictum and even that is 1,000

They wouldn't budge on my scholarship, even with 25k more from Cornell, so I've officially withdrawn.
Best wishes, guys!

Has anyone successfully negotiated an increased scholarship from Vandy? Figured I would ask. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not post publicly.

Lol. Was just going to send an email with less leverage than that, so... Thanks for hosting me on ASW!Jules239 wrote:They wouldn't budge on my scholarship, even with 25k more from Cornell, so I've officially withdrawn.

Eh, I can kinda see them not budging with that. Cornell is almost $30k more expensive than Vandy anyway.Jules239 wrote:They wouldn't budge on my scholarship, even with 25k more from Cornell, so I've officially withdrawn.

Are we thinking at this point that all Law Scholar Merit Awards have gone out and just no one reported the award on here or on LSN? I can't believe they would keep people waiting until mid-April to hear back about them, but I don't know.

I can, they don't want people using it as leverage. A Vandy full ride could get you some $$$ from DCNG.KatyMarie wrote:Are we thinking at this point that all Law Scholar Merit Awards have gone out and just no one reported the award on here or on LSN? Also, I contacted them a couple weeks ago and they mentioned one round having gone out and another going in the next few weeks. So, that would mean this week or next. Also, arklaw got is 1 week before seat deposit (ie the last week in April).
Regardless, I agree that it is quite odd that they wait so long, especially when the site explicitly says "recipients are typically notified by February."
My cycle has progressed to the point where I'm no longer considering Vandy, regardless of LSMA, and I'll be withdrawing. Good luck to y'all!

Sucks to see the waiting has drawn people to this, and it's happening at most schools. Goodluck to where ever you end up SMP!SplitMyPants wrote: I can, they don't want people using it as leverage. A Vandy full ride could get you some $$$ from DCNG.

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2017!
Could be that they sent out a round and none are TLS or LSN'ers. Seem somewhat unlikely, but given that only 4 or so are given out each year, it's not impossible. If any are turned down, it would probably be closer to the deposit deadline in April when it is given to someone else.KatyMarie wrote:Are we thinking at this point that all Law Scholar Merit Awards have gone out and just no one reported the award on here or on LSN? What do y'all think is up with Vandy's really high underemployment rate?

That makes sense then. I didn't realize that so few were given out!arklaw13 wrote:Could be that they sent out a round and none are TLS or LSN'ers. Vanderbilt is being stupid slow on travel reimbursements. I called them last week and they said "oh we didnt have an address on file, so it wasnt processed" Called them this week and they said it is being processed, and will take 3 weeks to be mailed

New numbers should be up Wednesday, but still, that's worrisome.Robbin Blue wrote:What do y'all think is up with Vandy's really high underemployment rate?

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2017!
I think that comes from the fact that the c/o 2012 school funded jobs were all part-time, long term, which counts for the biggest chunk of the underemployment. c/o 2013's will be lower since the school funded jobs are full time, long term, but that's not really any better since it's still school funded (although there are less school funded positions for 2013). The number of part-time and short term positions (other than school funded) is pretty small for c/o 2013 though. If my calculation is right, underemployment will be about 5.3%.jk148706 wrote:New numbers should be up Wednesday, but still, that's worrisome.Robbin Blue wrote:What do y'all think is up with Vandy's really high underemployment rate?
