How about, which NYC neighborhood will you live in if you attend NYU?

Possible answers:
Greenwich Village
East Village/Lower East Side
West Village/Chelsea
Murray Hill/Kip's Bay
Hell's Kitchen
Soho/Nolo/TriBeCa
Upper West Side
Brooklyn via L train (i.e. Williamsburg)
Brooklyn via JZ trains
Brooklyn via 2345 trains

Sorry, I don't know Brooklyn neighborhoods because I live in Manhattan.

LES/Chinatown

Park Slope/Prospect Heights/Carroll Gardens
Midtown East
Midtown West

I got the packet yesterday. It's just a one-page letter from Dean Kleinrock (with a handwritten sticky) and the enrollment form, no additional info.

Gramercy/Union square is a great area/close by, also probably too expensive for the law school budget..

One minor correction I'd make. Just realized that Greenwich Village would be more appropriate than West Village (GV includes WV as well as directly around NYU).

That's depressing.

I live in the Gramercy/Union Square area and it's pretty expensive, but there are definitely spots where it becomes affordable, especially if you find roommates. A lot of NYU people live in Stuy Town (just north of East Village and east of Gramercy) and there are NYU dorms around Union Square, but I'm pretty sure they're just for undergrads.

Yeah, Gramercy would just be included as part of Midtown East. Midtown isn't a huge place for NYU kids (besides Stuy Town), so it doesn't make too much sense to break it down into its constituent parts beyond just east and west, IMO.

Manhattan has so many tiny neighborhoods within neighborhoods that to me it makes most sense to leave the areas in their broader forms (for example, not separating out Alphabet City from the East Village).

I'm based in NYC, and have a place on the UWS. But I'm definitely thinking of moving further downtown, but we'll see how CLS works out first .

UWS isn't a bad spot for NYU Law because you have the 123. It's about 20-30 minutes depending on how close you live to the subway and how far uptown you are.

Where do most NYU Law students live? What are some of the neighborhoods I should target that are a good combo of price, convenience and quality?

I live in a super-low COL, but good-sized mid-west city, so going from my 1600 sq. ft. 3 level townhouse condo that I OWN for less than $800/month is going to be a BIG adjustment! :D  Any help you can provide would be great haha.

It's an awesome place to live. I just renewed my lease and I'll be paying around $1300 a month. I'm not going to find much cheaper anywhere in Manhattan that wouldn't add significantly to my commute or take a lot out of my quality of life.

Oh wow, that's a great price. Mine isn't anywhere close to that.

And yeah-- i'd definitley keep that/renew lease.

What is the best way to find apartments in the city? Are there any websites you like to use or have had success using when searching?

So NYU Law is easy to access if you're near the 123 trains or the L train (use Google Maps). The best combo of quality of life, cost, and accessability to NYU is probably in Williamsburg, which is in Brooklyn. It's 4-5 quick subway stops on the L train and an 8 block walk and it's still pretty cheap. If you're a hipster, you'll love it and there are tons of great spots in Williamsburg. The only problem is that the L train is the only feasible way of getting there and it only goes every 15-30 minutes after midnight so getting back home at night can suck.

@LS22. Use streeteasy.com to find apartments. I actually found both of my NYC apartments on Craigslist, but streeteasy will gives you a better idea of how the neighborhoods work. Also, NYC brokers are literally the worst people in the world and watch out for scams.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
