Wash U Class of 2017

Post by MtheG » Mon Nov 25, 2013 11:20 am

Hello all,

I noticed there wasn't a Wash U thread yet and wanted to get the ball rolling. For all those accepted, congrats! For all those waiting, the season is early and patience pays off. I went to undergrad at SLU and my family is from STL so feel free to ask me any questions. I look forward to seeing you all in the Fall.

400 page applicant thread that people are still posting in. I think one just becomes the other, unless I missed something.

Your class had a separate admitted students thread too:

Travel stipend email, but a flight alone costs quite a bit more than $200, not to mention hotel stays so I'm undecided. It's great that they're willing to help at all, though!

Yeah, I'm wondering if they're negotiable. W&L gave me $300 which almost covers the entire flight. Plus they pay for hotel ahead of time. I'd much rather visit WU and hoping I can ask for more.

If I go, I'm taking a car with me. Is parking decent around the campus?

I never had to spend a whole bunch of time in the WashU or the Loop but there always seemed to be a decent amount of parking available. The law school website says the campus parking plan comes to $480 a year. STL in general has a lot of parking and meters are free on Sundays and after 7(?) pm

I'm going to the April ASW. Might rent a car and sightsee while I'm at it. Anywhere I should go to that'll help "showcase" the city to me? Also willing to carpool/room with fellow-TLSers, if you're down.

The arch is kinda neat as long as you don't mind small spaces- the elevators to the top are a little rickety. The museum at the bottom is cool, too.

Anheuser-Busch hosts tours of the brewery. I've never been, but other people tell me it's worth it.

Make sure you stop by the Landing (down along the river front) and check out some of the bars down there.

Lumiere is a new casino/hotel downtown, so if you're down for some gambling you can check that out.

Those are ones that just pop into my head, there are plenty of smaller, more out-of-the-way things that are even better to see.

Is the Loop/Clayton the main housing option I should check out?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll leave this one for someone else who knows the area. I was a cable guy in the city for a while, so every neighborhood looks terrible to me. :D

Hello friends.

I'm not checking in here, but I graduated WUSTL UG. Thought about WUSTL law, but four years was enough for me. Still have fond memories though. Thought I might be helpful and try to take a stab at some of your questions.

* Cars are incredibly valuable. Parking is not cheap, there are no two ways around it, and there is really no meter parking anywhere near the A-B hall so you may have to shill out the money. WUSTL is basically in the middle of a wonderful suburb, so you have everything you need, but it's not like everything is around the corner. HOWEVER, I would say it is high probability that you'll be living within 20 minutes walking of A-B Hall. Never more than 30 minutes.

* Where to live: A lot of UGs live between Delmar Blvd ("The Loop") and campus on streets like Kingsbury and Washington Ave. Those apartments are in a pretty ideal location, and there are several brokers who rent them out. I figure there's nothing stopping law students from getting those apartments at a decent price. The UGs also aren't much of a noise and rowdiness issue unless you're in the same building. Most law students, I sense, live in the high rises along S. Skinker. I don't really remember their names, but they're nice.

* How to see STL: Yes, Budweiser tours are iconic, but if you're an aficionado, the Schlafly tours are better. Pappy's BBQ by SLU is an absolute must. If you have the time (and cash to spare) any type of sporting event (Blues or Cards) is a great time. STL fans love their teams like you've never seen. The Landing is great, Central West End is a really nice bar and restaurant district. Downtown STL can seem a little empty, but don't let it get you down, you'll figure out there are a lot of neat places.

Feel free to PM me if you want more. Congratulations to you all.

Some thoughts on what to see in STL:

*St. Louis Zoo
If the weather is good then the zoo is always cool. Admission is completely free and the facility is just absolutely incredible.

*City Museum
Admittedly, the facility caters to younger people but the artwork and exhibits are really outstanding. During the evenings it turns into a pretty epic bar.

*Central West End
If the weather is nice then I highly recommend walking around this neighborhood. A bunch of fantastic cafes and bars.

*Washington Avenue
It is THE downtown nightlife destination and is a place that you will frequent a lot if you go to school in St. Louis.

Great Places to Eat:

-Pappy's (BBQ)
-Rooster (Brunch)
-Favazza's (Italian)
-Pi (Pizza)
-The Libertine (highly reviewed new establishment)
-Bailey's Range (Burgers)
-Ted Drew's (Frozen Custard)

If it's nice out (you never know in March, but April should be nice)- Forest Park is a great place to just walk around. The zoo, art museum and history museum are all in Forest Park.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
