I caved in and checked at work. Why must this be so stressful.

Just think of how much worse it would be at a school that didn't have a 96% employment score.runthetrap1990 wrote:I caved in and checked at work. Why must this be so stressful.

So this may be premature, but are the numbers they send out for Fall Semester typically consistent with Spring Semester performance, or does it vary?

Unless the administration pushed professors to bump up their medians, I doubt it.runthetrap1990 wrote:So this may be premature, but are the numbers they send out for Fall Semester typically consistent with Spring Semester performance, or does it vary?

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
So which one of you will be brave enough to start the AJF thread?
You're asking about the cutoffs? Yes, they're usually consistent, with very minor fluctuations. You can see the past ones here.runthetrap1990 wrote:So this may be premature, but are the numbers they send out for Fall Semester typically consistent with Spring Semester performance, or does it vary?

Top 30% is 3.6475 (high!)
Top 10% is 3.8131
Top 5% is 3.8846
Just confirmed from registrar and unofficial transcript.

Those all seem abnormally high. The inflation...

Woah. So is that for this semester, or updated to reflect the entire year?runinthefront wrote:Top 30% is 3.6475 (high!)

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
if those were the 2 semester totals, it's a realistic possibility that median is over 3.5 now.tyrant_flycatcher wrote:Woah. So is that for this semester, or updated to reflect the entire year?runinthefront wrote:Top 30% is 3.6475 (high!)

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
I feel like it should be impossible for the classwide median to exceed 3.5 if each individual class is capped at 3.5.runthetrap1990 wrote:if those were the 2 semester totals, it's a realistic possibility that median is over 3.5 now.

that's true, i forgot about that point. would that mean that the >30% is just top heavy?Lavitz wrote:I feel like it should be impossible for the classwide median to exceed 3.5 if each individual class is capped at 3.5.runthetrap1990 wrote:if those were the 2 semester totals, it's a realistic possibility that median is over 3.5 now.

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
One thing that might be happening is that the curve is simply becoming flatter(i.e. fewer in the traditional 3.4-3.6 grouping and more at the extremes). This would increase the 70th percentile grades somewhat while keeping the median similar. Alternatively the entire curve could be shifting slightly upward, but like Lavitz said there's a cap on class medians at 3.5, so anyone there and up is almost certainly still above median. It's hard to believe that over 20% of the class is lumped between 3.5 and 3.63.

My oh my. I wonder what employers will believe our median is.

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
If professors are grading past a 3.5 curve, everyone who had the class would get a star on their transcript denoting that...which sucks. So, idk how the math works out, but there's no way that the individual professors could grade past a 3.5Lavitz wrote:I feel like it should be impossible for the classwide median to exceed 3.5 if each individual class is capped at 3.5.runthetrap1990 wrote:if those were the 2 semester totals, it's a realistic possibility that median is over 3.5 now.

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
Does anyone know if the cutoffs are adjusted after people transfer out (i.e. if 3 people from the top 10% transfer, effectively changing what is the true 10% cutoff, will this ever be reflected for these two semesters?).

Someone who has more than 100 posts should make this year's AJF thread. I'd do it but I can't use images, and it's not right without that ominous pic of MTH.

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
The cutofffs, to my knowledge, won't be adjusted until the end of the third semester. There's just no way for the Registrar's office to effectively do so.Cersei1992 wrote:Does anyone know if the cutoffs are adjusted after people transfer out (i.e. if 3 people from the top 10% transfer, effectively changing what is the true 10% cutoff, will this ever be reflected for these two semesters?).

Re: Cornell Class of 2017
1. If a firm under Required Hiring Criteria lists one GPA but under Callback Trend lists a lower GPA, which GPA should we pay attention to?
2. If a firm with multiple locations only wants you to bid once and then inform your interviewer of your preferred location, but Symplicity varies number of interview slots by location, why would you ever initially bid on the location with the lower number of interview slots? Reverse psychology?
3. What's the best way to determine approx. High/Low/Avg. GPA for firms that do not have callback trends? Similarly, if a firm lists GPAs for one location but not another, should we assume that GPAs are generally the same across locations?
4. I did not advance in Langfan. Should I still list Moot Court on my resume? It seems like TCR is yes, but I don't want to spend time talking to my interviewer about a competition I did OK but not great in. I'd rather the interviewer focus on other, more interesting parts of my resume. Thoughts?
5. It seems like the general feeling here is that our grades are slightly inflated compared to other classes, given that the cutoff for top 30% is an eye-opening 3.64. Should we downshift accordingly or proceed as is?
