Assuming your judge is a good person, I'm sure he or she will understand. Just talk to him/her immediately. Your judge will need to make plans to replace you. I'm assuming this is a very legitimate family/personal reason, not that you just don't want to clerk for a second year.

Yeah, just talk to your judge. He or she might want a new person to come in at a different time than you'd expect. If it's two years, the judge might stagger the clerks or something. It definitely sounds like something that should be worked out now.

Yeah, it makes the most sense to let your judge know as soon as possible. If your judge is semi-decent, he/she should completely understand, and the sooner you let your judge know, the sooner he/she can look for your replacement.
