I realize the market is really tight this year and not many opportunities may still exist, but I received a couple offers and am unsure whether to accept. Both firms pay well (190+ to enter as second year, plus 50+ bonus), but I don't necessarily love the firms. Is it worthwhile to roll the dice? Maybe insight from someone who has been through the process or dealt with a similar situation.
Thank y'all!!!
The OP was seeking guidance perhaps from a clerk experiencing a similar dilemma or even a former clerk with multiple offers that either accepted an offer in that position or declined to pursue other options. He/she clearly "wants" a job too. For what it's worth, I accepted a job last week with a firm because I felt that the market is dead and didn't want to risk a good opportunity. From talking to friends at firms in a few of the larger markets, they have indicated a lot of inactivity for clerkship hiring, so that influenced my decision. I would take what is already on the table, but use up all the time they are allowing so you can pursue other options in the meantime.

Anon respondent here.
I'm aware of what the OP was asking. And FWIW, I have already accepted an offer.
OP should either offer more info about what exactly s/he is hoping to accomplish by holding out, or take what's on the table. But just saying "I've got offers should I wait for something better?" is not really a good starting point. A lot of clerks I know are starting to get desperate and I think people should be aware that this market is still pretty tough. My advice is don't screw around.

Re: 2017-2018 Post-Clerkship Hiring
So this is what I came up with, hoping to get y'all's thoughts on it.
I'm what I consider a fringe candidate. Ok school with OK grades and an OK clerkship. These firms see no reason to hire me right now as they'd have to pay me the bonus. Like from their perspective, why would they do this? They can hold out for someone better or I will come back around next year, and they won't have to pay me the bonus.
As such, I think an OK/fringe candidate like me is actually less likely to receive an offer during the clerkship hiring cycle. Better to take lesser offer, get a couple years of experience and then try again right?
Thought?

Saw this asked before but didn't see any responses.... Any movement from MoloLamken?
I sent in my stuff and they emailed back pretty quick asking for my transcript. Radio silence since then (bout 6 weeks).

Re: 2017-2018 Post-Clerkship Hiring
I'm planning on accepting an offer in a smaller mid-size firm in PNW, but I could use some free advice. My concern is that I've been meeting with other firms in the same small legal community. Anyone have suggestions on language to politely decline the other firms' offers but still try to keep a positive relationship since I'll likely be seeing them a lot?

Just say in an email that you politely decline, as you don't think it's the right fit. I see no problems with that.Anonymous User wrote:I'm planning on accepting an offer in a smaller mid-size firm in PNW, but I could use some free advice. I would hesitate to say that it's not the right fit. That could be interpreted to mean that you don't like the people or think you wouldn't get along with them. You don't have to justify your decision to go elsewhere.proleteriate wrote:Just say in an email that you politely decline, as you don't think it's the right fit. Thank them for the offer. Say something about what a difficult decision it was, say something nice about the firm you're declining (presumably explaining why it was difficult). Say you look forward to encountering them as fellow members of the PNW bar.

Re: 2017-2018 Post-Clerkship Hiring
This hit on exactly the type of issue I was looking to avoid; namely, suggesting I don't like them, because I do, and I'm bound to be working with them to some extent in the future. I like the bones of (1) difficult decision, (2) compliment their firm, (3) I look forward to encountering them in the future. Thanks for the suggestions!Paul Revere wrote:I would hesitate to say that it's not the right fit. I talked to an associate at MoloLamken in January that told me the interviews were already well underway FWIW. Anyone hear of offers from Williams and Connolly?
