Hot damn! Was there any indication that those bonuses were only that high because it was a strong year at Hueston, or is there an expectation that bonuses will remain at that level going forward?

Our understanding is that they will remain at that level.

Am working in LA this summer and clerking COA 2018-2019. Would love the chance to learn more about Hueston Hennigan from those with knowledge on this thread.

I know a limited amount through classmates working there. From what I can tell, their lawyers have the resumes of an MTO-lite (lots of clerkships, but not as many at the super elite level as MTO, KVN, etc.). They all seem to work hard but get really great early experience. The partners on balance seem young and friendly, which leads to a much more laid-back culture than MTO or GDC. And, of course, people were stoked about those bonuses. Also, I think they have a 401K contribution (not even match) which is pretty dope when you're already getting paid way above market. All in all, seems like a pretty great place to work if you're trying to do trial work--not sure about how much appeals stuff they do though.

But there seems to be a HH associate in this thread, so I of course defer if I messed anything up.

That's me! Everything you said is accurate. There's some appeals stuff, but nowhere near the likes of GDC or MTO. Definitely more of a focus on trials. Sometimes I wish I worked at a big firm and could disappear for a few weeks, but the grass is always greener.

An email or call from Judge Johnson would be great, although John is so busy that any application is unlikely to be read. I'd be happy to pass along your materials, although you would be fine cold emailing a partner (I suggest D. Dixon or M. Kaba).

For the firms you mentioned, I think:

MTO: Better the clerkship, better the chances. True love of prestige.
Irell: Have good grades. Clerkship is totally whatever.
GDC: Have decent grades, be interesting/decent, good clerkships are a plus but not required.

I think Hueston is most similar to GDC in that regard. Don't get me wrong, It's very difficult to get an interview, but due more to size than anything else.
