Shwartz (CA3) is actively interviewing. I know 2 people from my school who have interviews lined up with her. But, I don't think either of them have heard anything yet.Anonymous User wrote:Any updates on judges currently reviewing/interviewing?

Does anyone have any insight on Ninth Circuit hiring in CA (excluding Kozinski and the like)?

This is a pretty anxiety-inducing read while waiting on 1L spring grades to be posted.

Re: 2019-20 Clerkship Application Thread
I'm not helping myself by helping others on Ninth Circuit here, but a lot of the judges have 2019 openings up already. Some seem to move really slow, like Judge Thomas, and some senior judges don't hire until closer to the time they need the clerks to start (but some of those are judges who require/highly prefer previous work experience).Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone have any insight on Ninth Circuit hiring in CA (excluding Kozinski and the like)?

You'll be fine. The vast majority of judges haven't posted yet. Many recently posted, and many will open up in the next month or two. We're at the beginning of the 2019 hiring except for the feeders.Anonymous User wrote:This is a pretty anxiety-inducing read while waiting on 1L spring grades to be posted.

And including a good number of the feeders. Apparently there have been a few hires on 1L fall grades alone, but the vast majority of Class of 2019 graduates who will go directly to feeders will be hired in the next 8 weeks.lavarman84 wrote:You'll be fine. I know this is a shot in the dark, but has anyone interviewed with Justice Liu for Cal. S. Ct. 2019-2020?

Re: 2019-20 Clerkship Application Thread
No one here seems to have much info about any of the CASCT Justices, unfortunately. I did find a random PDF from some school that stated his hiring timeline for the 2018-2019 term, and it looked like applications were due by August 2016. If that's accurate and he's on the same timeline for 2019-2020, you probably have another two months before really worrying about whether he's interviewing/hiring.BulletTooth wrote:I know this is a shot in the dark, but has anyone interviewed with Justice Liu for Cal. Do I have even an outside shot at SDNY? I was #2 at a T20 at the end of 1L, but dropped to #7 by 2L. Lowest grade by far in Fed Courts (my own damn fault). LR e-board position but nothing fancy, and no publication. Working at a NYC lit boutique. I wouldn't mind applying for 2020-2021 even. I hear they like w/e?

Re: 2019-20 Clerkship Application Thread
You apply in the manner that the judges or the court prefer. Many, if not most, state supreme courts have a page on their website that describe whether they hire clerks and, if so, what the application process is. Some courts use a centralized process with a common application deadline for all judges on the court. More common is each judge hiring their own clerks at their own pace. Of course, these judges still want applicants to follow whatever instructions they have posted on their website.Anonymous User wrote:

Broadly speaking, it's not all that different from applying to clerkships with federal judges insofar as there are different requirements depending on the judge (email/OSCAR/paper, # of recommenders, # of semesters of grades, etc.). There just isn't an OSCAR that lists all state supreme court judges in the country. If you're interested in a state supreme court clerkship, identify the states that you're interested in and then head to their websites. You'll find that some states are better than at others at offering information. If you're still wanting for information, check the Vermont guide. If you're still wanting for information after that, scour the website of the flagship in-state school, which likely feeds clerks to its state supreme court. If you're still wanting for information at this point, enlist the help your career services office/clerkship office. If they're useless or unable to gather information and you're still in the dark, you can always call the court or just send a paper application to chambers.
Finally, be aware of judicial terms. Some state supreme court judges face election or retention. I wouldn't recommend letting terms affect your application strategy too heavily, given how many judges easily win retention, have no real electoral opposition, or win despite real electoral opposition. But it's worth understanding that a state supreme court judge's view to the horizon may be different than a federal judge's. Also, as at the federal level, be on the lookout for new judges taking office (whether by appointment or election). You're more likely to get noticed as a clerkship applicant if you're in the first wave of applications to arrive.

(The Vermont guide is an online guide to state clerkships maintained by Vermont Law School; your CSO should be able to give you the password to access it. Sometimes if a judge is up for retention they won't hire on their usual timeline but will wait to confirm they've been retained.)
Also most California SSC justices don't hire term clerks.

You can mail or email applications to the judge or have connected recommenders send your information to the judge.Anonymous User wrote:I'm a little confused because it seems CO 2019 can't even access OSCAR yet.Anonymous User wrote:And including a good number of the feeders.
