It seems like every time I talk to a lawyer about clerkships, the ones who did a clerkship rave about it, and the ones who didn't say it's not a big deal.

Same can be said of those with a JD/MBA.

Are those with clerkships/MBAs trying to justify the time spent? Or are those without trying to justify their lack of credentials?

Maybe the value proposition is different to different lawyers. Maybe the ones who haven't clerked did not and still do not the added value of the clerkship, and the ones who did view it differently. You can obviously be great lawyers through both paths -- the value proposition of a clerkship depends on you own evaluation.
