How is everybody figuring out judge hiring practices generally? Word of mouth at my school is helpful but is it just easier to call each judge's chambers and ask questions? I don't want to be an annoying prospective clerk.

At least one hired, possibly a second. Otherwise, I don't know about the interviewing schedule.

She's full. I know two of the 2020 clerks and both said she is done hiring.

any movement in the past few weeks during this pandemic? I don't see many posts on Oscar, but many CA5 judges don't really use Oscar.

anyone? This circuit thread is lacking compared with the others. Insight into hiring now, both on and off plan would be great. How are current clerks faring with post clerkship jobs in this climate? There have also been several recent appointees (including district level)

Agreed - anyone have info on recent COA appointees currently hiring 1Ls? Or holder appointees for that matter.

My assumption is that they are all hiring or have hired by now. Oldham is certainly finished hiring, and I'd assume the same for the other Austin based judges as well.

There are quite a few open positions on OSCAR (but no idea if they are up-to-date). Does anyone have info on whether some of these are actually full?

Austin: Owen, 21; Willett, 22

Houston: Smith, 22; Costa, 21; Elrod, 22; King, 22

Dallas: Haynes, 22

Mississippi: Graves, 21; Southwick, 21; Barksdale, 21

Louisiana: Dennis, 21; Duncan, 22; Clement, 22; Higginson, 22

I have weekly updates set up for all of the Texas-based District and Circuit Judges. Judge Haynes amended both her main profile and the two positions starting in 2022 limiting applications to OSCAR-only. One might infer, based on the update, that the positions remained unfilled as of some time in May. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific intel going beyond this sort of OSCAR tea-leaf reading related to any of the CA5 judges' posted positions.

Smith is a great clerkship. He gets to write a ton of interesting opinions, and his chambers work are quite organized. As many others have said, he only takes applications from 1Ls, and I believe he still has slots open for 2022-23. Probably the only judge in the country where you can show up to work in shorts and a t-shirt.

He gave a talk several years ago at my school and said he only takes 1Ls because he likes to train them before a firm or another judge has started to do so. I've only heard great things about him and the above is true about shorts and a shirt. However, it forgets the flipflops.

Judge Smith has a great alumni network and his clerkship has a superb reputation for quality of life. Probably one of the best few non-feeder conservative clerkships in the country.

He does not adhere to the hiring plan. At my school, there is a professor that will recommend students to him but anybody is welcome to apply. Often several do. He seems to largely recruit from the same schools, so I imagine it is a similar process at other schools too.

Does anyone know what terms Judge Ho is hiring for? OSCAR seems to indicate he is only accepting email and paper applications, but it doesn't specify for which terms.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
