It just seems like everything has to be more formal with judges so I'm not sure how to write the email

I think you're over-thinking it. That sounds fine; you're right that you should be formal with a judge, but I think the appropriate level of formality is comparable to what any other potential legal employer might expect. If you want to be a little more formal, consider saying "Dear Judge X."
