Hi all. I'll be joining you in September, and have been living in Hyde Park (with my husband) for the last several years... and not in Regents Park. Feel free to ask any questions.

What's the "free internet" at Regents like? My SO and I had free internet at our apartment in UG but being shared by the whole building made it constantly suck.
Regents seems a little pricey but $100 off rent seems good - does that discount just apply throughout the time you're a student?

The management company is pretty incompetent, I'm pretty sure it's 100 off always if you show you are accepted. We moved in a month before school started and weren't technically students and got the discount for example.Crowing wrote:What's the "free internet" at Regents like? The free internet is typically adequate but it depends on what you are doing. With my roommate and I both trying to do resource intensive things it would bogged down sometimes so we ended up upgrading. If you just browse and watch youtube and stuff you will be fine, if you and your SO are both like gamers or like to download a bunch of shit you might consider upgrading. Their max package is only $40/month anyway which isn't terrible.
I will say the internet has a habit of crapping out periodically for 1-10 minutes. It is extremely frustrating when it happens, but it apparently happens to everyone here. Hasn't happened in a month at least as far as I know so it is a rarity.

Hah that sounds perfectly fine. In UG the apartment my SO and I lived in was 340/month for rent, cable, internet, and all utilities except electricity, so after splitting I was paying $170/month. So my perspective on this kind of stuff is super skewed

Crowing: If you are going to have a car, it will cost you as much as your share last year to park it
I came from a flyover state though so I'm paying triple what I'm used to, it takes some getting used to.
Reallysearch: I'll put up my Dean Perry bat signal and get back to you
CPap: If it's just you I think you will be fine. The issue would be if you had a roommate who was also streaming sports and Netflix at the same time. They can instantly upgrade you though, so you might as well start free and see if it meets your needs, then call them if it doesn't.

How is driving to campus? Do you buy a parking pass each year? And how readily available are parking spots?2014 wrote:Crowing: If you are going to have a car, it will cost you as much as your share last year to park it

You can buy a parking pass it's not cheap. For those who buy one the lot you park in is ~3 blocks from the law school building and afaik parking there is no issue. I personally did not buy one, the 172 bus leaves from right in front of Regents and you never have to wait more than like 5 minutes for it.Crowing wrote: How is driving to campus? Alternatively, if you are willing to get to school by 7:45 or so, there are a ton of street parking spots near the school. I get to school right around then every day and have been able to park within a block of the law school without fail. The only times I've had issues are if I'm late and get there after 8:15 or so, but even then there is a free lot about 6 blocks from the school that works in a pinch.
Regents has free bike hang up racks in the parking garage, you just have to register with them. The bike rack at the school is right next to the front door within view of the desk person. I would put your chances at having anything happen to it at 0% unless you leave it overnight, and even then you are probably fine.Regulus wrote:Along these same lines, my wife and I are actually planning on living car-free during our time in Chicago; we intend to use iGo or Zipcar when we do need to go somewhere far (Regents has an iGo car stationed on-site; it is like a $50 annual fee and then about $7 per hour to rent it for those who have never heard of it before). Accordingly, I want to ride a bike to campus using the Lakefront Trail to the east of South Lake Shore Drive. Do you know anyone who does this? And if so, how safe is it? (It doesn't look like anyone was killed or even shot last year between Regents and Chicago according to this, but their data doesn't include things like muggings, etc.)Crowing wrote:How is driving to campus? (route)
Other than my own personal safety, during my time in Chicago last weekend, I saw 2 bikes chained to poles directly in front of Regents, and they looked like this:
(pic)
I assume that I can park my bike indoors somewhere at Regents, but while I have it parked at the University, is this something that will commonly happen? Is there any way to prevent/minimize the chances of this happening?
The commute should be plenty safe especially on a bike. I and others I know run on lake shore, it's a pretty well traveled area, and I know some who walk to school from Regents when its nice. Especially during the day, crime here is not really a thing. If you for whatever reason have to ride back at night, just don't be an idiot and you will be fine (i.e. pay attention, stay in well lit areas, keep moving if you can, etc).
Also Regents definitely has 2 zip cars, I can confirm their existence but Idk anyone who has used them.

Well the 171/172 discussion isn't relevant anymore as they're likely discontinuing it after this school year. But the way it works now is you use your UChicago ID and it's free, it's a separate system from the UPass (which we are not eligible for).

Nah the UCID only works for the 170/171/172. You're on your own for the other CTA routes. I recommend getting a CTA Plus card.Regulus wrote:Yeah, I remember you mentioning that on the first page of this thread. Does the UCID allow law students to travel freely across the entire CTA, or is it just for routes to/from the law school? (Sorry for continually not posting these questions in the "UChi rising 2Ls and 3Ls (!!!) taking Questions" thread; I just want to keep these very basic non-law related questions here in the C/O 2016 thread for reference of future admits. Thanks again for your help, Xifeng. Wow no 171/172 next year is going to suck for HP dwellers. I suppose it's worth seeing what solution they come up with though.

Re: Chicago Law Class of 2016
Nothing is public yet, as far as I know, but fwiw our dean of students told me they would be replaced by similar service. I've actually been really pleased with the NightRide shuttles, and I assume that's along the lines of what the 171/172 would be replaced with. The shuttle that runs from the undergrad library (3 blocks from the Law School) to Regents leaves every 15 minutes after 5pm (until 3 or 4am I think) and is dependable. If the 172 was replaced by a shuttle that included Regents and the Law School that left every 15 minutes, the only downsides I can think of are:
Probably lower capacity than the CTA buses.
Won't run as often in the morning as the CTA buses, which are about every 5 minutes.

A shuttle might even be better since it can just go straight to Cornell instead of crapping along Woodlawn for like 10 minutes. Related question: Why do those buses loiter in front of Harris like that? Is it to stay on schedule?

Well it may still be a tough commute from Regents to Cornell even if its a direct shuttle. You may want to consider closer housing options, perhaps in College town?Mad Hatter wrote:A shuttle might even be better since it can just go straight to Cornell instead of crapping along Woodlawn for like 10 minutes.
