Best BBQ is Franklins but you gotta get there early and be prepared to wait 2 hrs in line. Home Slice on South Congress has amazing pizza. I love Trudys for tex mex, but more because of the Mexican maritinis then the food hahaajclark1992 wrote:Checkin' in. Will be visiting UT next week during my spring break. Any of you guys have experience living in studio apartments in Austin? I would preferably like to live in one close to school because I might not have a car my 1L year and even if I did I would still like to live close by.

Hopdoddy is great for burgers and beer, La Condesa is awesome for nice-ish Mexican, Home Slice has excellent pizza.

Take a drive to Lockhart for BBQ, get burgers at Casino El Camino, breakfast tacos at tacodeli, chicken and waffles at Lucky J's, doner kepab at Vert's, seafood at Perla's, and if you want to treat yourself get dinner at Wink.StylinNProfilin wrote:Best BBQ is Franklins but you gotta get there early and be prepared to wait 2 hrs in line. I studied twice in Germany and that was a staple of my diet so I actually teared up a bit when I found out I could get it here...it's basically unavailable in the states.WokeUpInACar wrote:OMG yesyesyes, SO GOOD.romanticegotist wrote:Take a drive to Lockhart for BBQ, get burgers at Casino El Camino, breakfast tacos at tacodeli, chicken and waffles at Lucky J's, doner kepab at Vert's, seafood at Perla's, and if you want to treat yourself get dinner at Wink.StylinNProfilin wrote:Best BBQ is Franklins but you gotta get there early and be prepared to wait 2 hrs in line. Re: Texas Class of 2016
I was in Austin looking for apartments this past weekend, and I found that all of the apartments really close to campus were either really old and kind of gross, or swarming with loud undergraduates. I ended up looking a little farther out (about 7 minutes from campus) and found a nice place that is on a direct bus route to the campus. I have been *told* that the buses in Austin, especially in that area, are pretty good.. but who really knows until they try?timeandspace11 wrote:Any of you guys have experience living in studio apartments in Austin? Re: Texas Class of 2016
Has anyone submitted a matching scholarship request yet? I know they said they'll start reviewing those later this week. I am planning to submit my full UCLA scholarship in hopes that TX will bump up my offer some. Do you think they consider UCLA a "peer school"? I figure they're both state schools very close in the USNWR rankings...
The matching scholarship page says you can submit multiple offers at one time, but since I got significantly less from UVA and Michigan ($60K and $54K respectively), which are less than my initial offer from UT (if you count the in state tuition offer) I am thinking there's no point on mentioning those? Anyone agree/disagree?

If UCLA isn't a peer school I'm not sure what would be... I'd also absolutely include the Mich and UVA offers. They may not help, but including them certainly won't hurt.risa wrote:Has anyone submitted a matching scholarship request yet? I know they said they'll start reviewing those later this week. Re: Texas Class of 2016
I'm torn on when to submit mine. I really, really want to go to UT but I don't know if I can do it at the price point they have offered considering some of my other offers. My main trepidation is in submitting it too early and getting decent sized offers from higher ranked schools later in the cycle and then them ignoring my request because I already used my one shot. But at the same time I would like to make a school choice as early as possible so I can plan for my family and I have a price in mind that if UT came down to I would deposit on the spot. I'll probably submit mine soon and then try to negotiate a second time if it has to come to that.risa wrote:Has anyone submitted a matching scholarship request yet? Re: Texas Class of 2016
I hear ya. I guess I'm thinking that a) no higher ranked school will even come close to what UCLA (or even UT for that matter) has offered me and b) particularly because Dean Ingram stressed on the facebook page that they're not just looking at straight #s, but rather at overall cost of attendance for school X vs. UT, that I'm not likely to have anything more convincing than this UCLA offer and I'd rather have an idea how seriously I can consider UT sooner rather than later.BigZuck wrote:I'm torn on when to submit mine. Re: Texas Class of 2016
Im also pretty confused in when to submit my matching request. TO be honest Texas has already given me a better deal than most of the lower ranked schools I have applied to. If I could negotiate for a few more grand I feel like I would be in a really strong position to attend. I think I am going to wait for WUSTL and BC offers. Texas may not consider them peer schools but I am hoping they would at least give me a small bump. I am also just going to show them I got in to Cornell. I doubt I will get much for Cornell but hopefully it would further UTs incentive to up the $$.

Re: Texas Class of 2016
If it's any help: UT matched the exact amount of $$ from a T14 for me, even though I was already instate (so UT with $$ ended up being a lot cheaper than the T14).

Yeah, I just scheduled a meeting with Linda in the Financial Aid office while I was in Austin for ASW. (It may have been less formal than a meeting really. It may have just been me dropping off the offer letter in person.)WokeUpInACar wrote:Richie: Did you do it in person? Could you elaborate on the exact process that occurred?

Richie: Had UT already given you an offer before you showed them the Virginia offer.

No, but I was reapplying from the previous year ago (and they had offered a scholarship the previous year (not quite 20K/yr though)).
