For most schools, are grades for the first semester graded writing assignment released along with exam grades? Or not until the end of the year?

pick them up on the last day of exams

This is probably different for every school. FWIW at my school our professors gave us our memos/grades back as soon as finals were over so that we could edit them and use them as writing samples.
