Yes, most professors let you use outlines for the exam. You may have one picky professor who wants you to commit to memory (this is presumably to help you when it comes time to take the bar exam), but this is unusual. None of my professors required me to commit law to memory.

I've only had one exam where outlines weren't permitted, and it was for a class where everything was based on statute interpretation (so we were allowed to have our casebooks with the relevant statutes listed). It seems a little dumb to not allow outlines/books during an exam.

I think you're in the minority here, open book/outline (at least anecdotally) seems far more common. Only half of one of my seven 1L classes was closed book.

It's truly just professor-specific. Half of my 1L exams at my T14 were closed book. Other classmates with different professors had 0 or 1 closed book exams.

At georgetown closed book exams were not unheard of but were definitely the exception.

My torts class had notes on midterm, closed on final. My contracts 1 and 2 were closed. CivPro 1 and 2 were closed outline, but able to use last empty page in the FRCP to handwrite notes and we used same book. Property 1 and 2 were closed. My Pub law was closed. My Competitiveness and Corruption (llm) was open notes.

That's my 1L year at my TTT/TTTT.

2) RCSO, that's too many classes, bro.
3) I heard the reason TTTTs split up and/or defer traditional 1L classes is to deter transfers
