Good Luck everyone. Just for reference, this seems like it was a very very competitive board. This is an excerpt from the powers that be in the jag corps:

"The Spring 2017 Accession Selection Board was held 28-30 March 2017. The board was composed of [OFFICERS].

This board professionally recommended 3I Student Program candidates from a pool of 330 impressive applicants, for a selection rate of 9.3%. The class includes 14 women and 17 men from various backgrounds representing 26 different law schools. Eight have completed internships or externships with the Navy JAG Corps. Our future colleagues are those who continue the high academic and intellectual reputation of the Navy JAG Corps by having participated in moot court and mock trial competitions, as well as having served as editors for law review and other law school journals. They speak a host of languages including Korean, Spanish, Japanese, and Malayalam, and have studied or worked abroad in places such as Costa Rica, Argentina, Germany, Japan and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Many of our future judge advocates have prior military experience, including a former Legalman First Class. Other individuals have worked at the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Teach for America, and in various state government positions. This class also includes former college athletes in tennis, rugby, lacrosse and soccer. Whoah. It was 20%-ish just a couple years ago. Looks like the anticipated build-up is slowing down back to it's regular historical 9%-ish rate.

Congrats to all who were accepted, can't wait to see you all in the fleet!

This is true. If you applied and weren't selected, I know it blows but try not to let it get inside your head too much and make you think you suck. JAG accessions is just a weird animal. I've seen people get dinged who, at least on paper, were great applicants, and people who were maybe not as strong get accepted. It's kind of a crapshoot. If you got dinged, it doesn't mean you have a shitty resume or anything. Just means the Magic 8 ball didn't spit your name out on this attempt.

A few questions for people at NJS/in the fleet already:

1) When did you get your first duty station?

2) Did you get any time off between NJS and reporting to your first assignment to house hunt?

3) Can you leave the immediate area during NJS?

1. It varies based on the Detailer. I knew mine before ods, but not long before. I can't recall how soon before I found out, but I remember being contacted by my sponsor while I was still home waiting to head out.

2. You get your base travel time, which is based on how far away Newport is from your base. Usually about 4 ish days. Any time you take after that is charged as leave. You can get house hunting liberty but you have to ask for it and it's subject to command approval.

3. Yes, but there is a limit you can't go beyond without submitting a chit. It's just a simple form and everyone's get approved. You can basically go wherever you want just have a reasonable plan to get back in time. NYC etc. Boston was within the limit, no chit required. It's a good opportunity to travel!

does any one know what happens with health insurance during the 4 weeks in September/October they kick you back into IRR? I know you don't get paid, but I wasn't sure if they also kicked you off the insurance as well or if you aren't on it at ODS.

Just a random thought I had while sitting here waiting for orders and studying for the bar..

Pretty sure you're on your own. I don't think you're on Tricare between ODS-NJS.

Invited via Marine Core, what's the difference between area of military if we're in court for a few years? Just need to be off my ADHD meds for 6 months before I ship out

Is this English?

Anyway, I don't really get what you're asking. What do you mean the difference between "area of military"? Like different geographical assignments? Different services, like Army vs. Navy vs. Air Force? What do you mean you were "invited via Marine Core"? You were offered a commission by the Marine Corps, or you were invited to apply? What exactly are you asking here?

Frankly, you seem pretty lost. I'm skeptical that someone who spells it "Marine Core" got through the application process.

I'd just ask Code 61 if they can email you those LORs. The SP application will have you upload everything as a PDF. It's probably simpler for you to just do it yourself.

You probably won't have enough time to get LORs from the externship before the deadline. It's a little weird to ask someone to write you a recommendation when you've been there a week. But make sure you get them regardless. If you need to reapply they'll come in handy.

Hi there,

First time poster here--thanks to all who have maintained this thread. Reading through it has given me more information than I've been able to find anywhere else about the JAG selection process. I am starting law school this fall and have had an interest in a Navy JAG career for quite a while. It certainly isn't my only reason for attending law school, but it is a path I would very interested in pursuing. My question is regarding medical waivers--I was born with strabismus (basically, born cross-eyed), and I had 4 corrective surgeries for it as a child. The last one was prior to my freshman year of high school, so well over a decade ago. I wear moderate-strength contacts/ glasses and have mild astigmatism (I currently don't wear astigmatism-correcting lenses because I find them a bit uncomfortable and don't particularly need 20/20 vision in my civilian life, but I certainly could). My vision is fine, depth perception isn't great, but obviously this doesn't pose any issues towards being a good attorney. However, I don't know if this will disqualify me from military service.

I know vision requirements seem unrelated to this thread, but I have had trouble finding any info on vision waivers for staff officers vs pilots, SEALS, etc. If anyone has any experience with medical waivers for vision, I'd love to hear it--I'd hate to invest time and hope in pursuing a JAG career only to be thwarted at the end for my eyesight. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone might have!

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the only differences in medical requirements as far as vision goes are between pilots and non-pilots. I don't believe JAGs have more leeway than, say, submariners. If you do some Googling, you should be able to find the Navy commissioning medical requirements.

I suspect what you're describing would be waivable, but you're smart to do some research before you invest a lot of time and energy in pursuing a JAG spot.

I have poor vision as well. Aside from reviewing the commissioning requirements, the only way to know for sure if you'll make it through is to try. I had to go to a civilian eye specialist after MEPS for a more in depth eye exam. It seems the ultimate reviewer certainly took into consideration that I'd be sitting at a desk for the majority of my career. I believe there is a common sense factor that will be taken into consideration.
