Are you a big boulevarder/football fan? I'm pretty pumped about the whole thing. I went to a tiny D3 school where people went to the football game on homecoming and that was about it. I was at the SMU-TCU game last year. It's not UT or anything, but it was definitely fun.ebo wrote:SMU undergrad here

Re: SMU 2014
For sure. The Boulevard is awesome, probably one of the best tailgating scenes anywhere. When I started at SMU they sucked and no one really went to the games, but everyone still tailgated. Now that June has turned it around and we're not terrible, people are starting to give a shit and actually go to the games which is cool. We've gotten several solid recruiting classes in now and they should be pretty competitive for the next three years- there was even an ESPN article a few months back about how they could be the next "BCS buster" next yearBurgstaller04 wrote:Are you a big boulevarder/football fan? Withdrew from NU and have committed to SMU. Look forward to meeting you all in the fall.
Now I need to nail down my living arrangements. So the consensus is Uptown and the Village are the best places to live? Anyone any leads on dog-friendly apartment complexes or duplexes?

I've actually been reading Ponyfans.com for quite a while now in anticipation of going to SMU. They had several threads about that article. If you like SMU football, and you've never seen that site, check it out. There's a ton of info there.ebo wrote:For sure. The Boulevard is awesome, probably one of the best tailgating scenes anywhere. A couple of the Village Apts are pet-friendly...the one I can think of off the top of my head is the Gate, but I know there are more. Congrats on the big decision!!ArchRoark wrote:Withdrew from NU and have committed to SMU. Look forward to meeting you all in the fall.

If any incoming 1L guys are thinking about trying to find a roommate, PM me. I'm open to the idea of saving a few hundred dollars a month on rent to spend on whiskey.

Is the area just across the highway from SMU that bad to live?
I may be looking to purchase a condo, any ideas places to look other than uptown and the village?

I'd be wary of purchasing a condo in Dallas. Bad resale.
What area across the highway? Mockingbird Station? It's very nice these days.

Re: SMU 2014
Hmm, thanks for the info. I did a bit of google browsing and it does seem that the condo market in Dallas is rather oversaturated. That said, there seems to be some decent deals in Uptown (or what I think is Uptown). Would anyone mind doing a quick lil google map like the one that is posted in the UofH thread circling the various neighborhoods?kalvano wrote:ArchRoark wrote:Is the area just across the highway from SMU that bad to live?

I am not sure if the area I am looking at is Mockingbird Station, I was refering to the area east of SMU directly across 75.

Re: SMU 2014
The problem isn't oversaturation, it's more a lack of demand and appreciation. Single family homes in the D/FW area are so inexpensive that condos don't really appreciate at all and are tough to re-sell.
But the area right across 75 is nice.

In case y'all haven't checked the admitted students site lately, I wanted to let you know they posted a new doc with frequently asked questions. Some of it is relevant.

Re: SMU 2014
Below are some questions I asked to my friend who lives at Cambridge Court based on PMs I got.
1. Is there A/C in the units?
Yes there is A/C and heater, and if it doesn’t work you can inform them and they get you a new system or fix it.
2. How is the apartment maintenance? How quickly do they fix if anything breaks?
Maintenance is pretty good. I remember I lost my key and I asked them to make a new lock and they did it by the next day.
3. Are there any issues with insects/pests?
I haven’t come across any insects/pests in my apt (I live on the 3rd floor so usually not a problem up high) and I’ve been living there since September, but the apt complex is next to a swamp area so you’ll see raccoons on the sides of the complex. Not that it’s a bad thing and that’s what I only heard, I haven’t really seen any myself.
4. How are the neighbors/ sound etc? Is it mostly students or a good mix?
My neighbors are good. There’s a good mix of students and adults. Maybe if you happen to get an apt around students it might get noisy from time to time, but around me there are only adults. I usually go home on the weekends so I can’t really say much about the weekends, but everyone I meet randomly around there are really nice and friendly.
If you plan to rent at Cambridge Apts, please PM me. If you mention my friend’s name to the ladies in the office, she will get credit on her rent.

People asking about A/C - A/C is required in Dallas. When you get to implied warranty of habitability, you'll understand.

I would even stretch that to mean central A/C... I hate window units.kalvano wrote:People asking about A/C - A/C is required in Dallas. When you get to implied warranty of habitability, you'll understand.

+1. Who wants to sit next to the same window day in and day out to get some relief from the oppressive heat/humidity?ArchRoark wrote: I would even stretch that to mean central A/C... I hate window units.

Does anyone know if we get anything after paying our deposits? Sticker for our car, free pony, Lexus so we can fit in in the UG parking lots?

You get several mandatory OCS lectures about being professional, and a condescending and arrogant look from the Dean.
