Re: Harvard Law 2014
amazon is your friend guys...though i guess some may be wary of getting cheaper used books off amazon for the first semester. i got everything new the first semester -- unnecessary supplements that i never used, textbooks, etc. -- cost me $900 :O
second semester used amazon and b&n, got used books that were in great condition, got lucky that not all my classes required textbooks, and spent only $60 :O
i would not say that my first semester texts were significantly better (and certainly not $840 better!) than my second semester texts

Section 6 we've got...
Torts: M. Chamallas (visiting)
Property: C. Donahue
Leg & Reg: M. Stephenson
Civ Pro: J. Goldsmith
LRW: A. White
Any insights on these guys? Guys used gender neutral-like.

Anybody know where we can find syllabi online? I keep seeing only the 2010-11 course sites still up...

charlie donahue is a historian of medieval law and teaches how you would expect a medieval historian too (read: lots of obscure future interests/estates in land stuff). martha chamallas is a feminist scholar who i know nothing about. i hear great things about stephenson (young, rising star, social science orientation) and goldsmith (used to be the director of the OLC in the bush administration, prolific writer, supposedly very good).bedefan wrote:Section 6 we've got...

huh, when I looked it up it said Stella Elias Burch for LRW. Just checked again and it still says that. Do they divide sections up for LRW?rui wrote:Sec 1:

Meltzer taught Crim for Section 5 last year. He was awesome (soft-spoken, intense, crazy brilliant, really interesting class discussion).Calla Lily wrote:Sec 7:

I know that you said there aren't many Sec. 7 people floating around, but just wanted to see if you knew or heard anything about these professors.

Also - Rubenstein is a legend - everyone who has him thinks he's the best professor ever.

The one teaching Civ Pro for section 3? Yay.gilagarta wrote:Also - Rubenstein is a legend - everyone who has him thinks he's the best professor ever.
I bumped into an alum last night who was a big fan of Professor Singer - he mentioned it before I told him that Singer would be our section head.

Any idea when we'll hear about locker assignments or book lists?

Can a 2 or 3L confirm that the list of books on the Coop website is likely to be accurate for particular sections?

Yes, at least it has always been accurate for me.delusional wrote:Can a 2 or 3L confirm that the list of books on the Coop website is likely to be accurate for particular sections?

On a related note, does anyone else find the website unbelievably annoying? Having to sign in separately to all the different sites is really frustrating. Also, no, I don't know how to find anything other than my class schedule.jff207 wrote:Are you guys finding course sites online? I want to look up syllabi as well as books but can't.

Adding My 0.02
Stella for LRW is intense but you will learn a ton.
Greiner is intense as well. If you mesh with his teaching style you will do well. If not, then good luck to you. He is obsessed with his quest for tenure and Harry Potter. Awkward but likeable guy.
Zittrain- lots of people are obsessed with him. He is clearly brilliant but could be a better teacher. He does use slides which is helpful.
Henry Smith- he is soooo sweet but you won't learn a thing. He wrote the book so expect regurgitation and long lectures on the origins of the pictures. He uses panels so you will know which days you are up for. That being said- everyone loves the man.
http://www.campusbookrentals.com- A good look if you are not a super heavy writer/highlighter in books (although they allow you to). Anything is better then paying a G for books you will be stuck with at the end of the summer.
Enjoy the rest of you summer. Engage in as much nonsense as you can. Because once things get going, you will wish you had it back.

It is usually right but I've had issues before (incorrect edition, listing things as mandatory that were optional etc). You may want to wait till you get a syllabus for your classes.gilagarta wrote:Yes, at least it has always been accurate for me.delusional wrote:Can a 2 or 3L confirm that the list of books on the Coop website is likely to be accurate for particular sections?

So, any older students have any suggestions for what to do before orientation? The first day's reading for each class? Memorize the syllabus? Read the student handbook? Anything else?

Chill, explore the campus, and meet new friends. Nothing you do in the first month of law school will really affect your grades. It definitely will affect how much you enjoy the rest of your 1L year though.delusional wrote:So, any older students have any suggestions for what to do before orientation? Also Note on Casebooks: Sigh up for Amazon Prime Student (Free year of super fast/free shipping) and make sure you always check to see if you can buy books there first. Its much much cheaper than buying at the COOP.

Eh renting books should be fine. Most likely you won't need your books in the future (unless you want to set up some bookshelf that looks pretty). Even then you can just buy them online once they're not the latest edition for like pennies on the dollar.kajosa wrote:Any thoughts about renting books?
