Dear UVA IT: Thanks for making everything so 'secure' that's it's damn near unusable. I can barely remember my UVA web ID, and even if I do, there's no effing way I can remember your absurd passwords.

If you think UVA is bad, just wait until you see how a law firm operates.

I've worked in firms, and at least in them older partners have some pushback authority against the IT guys in terms of keeping things usable. For example, I'm sure emails at firms still follow the FirstInitial/LastName@firm.com standard or some variant, rather than the YourInitials/RandomCharactersThatNoOneElseWillEverRememberSoThatHiringPartnerYouNetworkedAPhoneInformationalInterviewWithWillNeverBeAbleToContactYouHaHa1337Haxxorz@virginia.edu that our IT department prefers.

You can create your own email adderss @virginia.edu. But I was mostly referring to the passwords--for accessing my firm's computer system remotely for example, I needed to know my username, which was a string of numbers and letters, my actual password, and my BlackBerry password so that I could access my RSA SecurID password (which changes every sixty seconds). And accessing WestLaw and Lexis was even worse.

You can't set up your email@virginia.edu to be whatever you want. You can set it up to be NAME@email.virginia.edu though.

There is a separate bookstore inside the law school, at the end of Slaughter hall.

While I love that the uva email is through gmail and not some proprietary system that barely works, UVA computing has to be one of the most nightmarish systems I've ever encountered. What possible reason is there for having such a convoluted mess?

This may sound crazy, but other schools have systems that are far worse. I miss the UVA setup.

Non-stop is better than the alternatives, though. A problem, but one worth having. I know of people who had 9+ interviews on the first day, I'm sure that was a nightmare.
