T14 to CLS

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Feb 17, 2017 1:39 pm

Is it worth it transfer out of the lower T14 to Columbia? How hard would it likely be granting one is within the top 10%?

If you're at like, GTown paying sticker, then go for it.

Even if Gtown I would think twice tbh. CLS is stupidly expensive.

I think from GTown it's worth it. From most T14s, not, but Gtown is a very poor school.

Really if you're trying to transfer with top 10% grades at a T14, your goal should be HYS w/ that sweet grant money.

Ridiculous statement.

OP, what are your career goals and where do you want to work?

GULC admits too many students, but someone who is top 10% is not going to have problems finding a job. It doesn't really make sense for OP to transfer to CLS.

Big Law -> Academia, NYC

Depends on a few things but:

You repeat or do better 2nd semester + Law review --> Stay, maybe transfer for Y, but Lower T14 with LR will easily set you up for clerkships + lors, both important for your goals.

You stay within top 10%, but no LR --> Becomes tougher, I say transfer for HYS, and possibly for C. I think given Academia as a goal, UChi is a better option than Columbia. You're still in a great shot for BigLaw here. Debt should also play a factor.

You do worse but do well enough where you can transfer --> Probably worth it to transfer in this scenario to YSHCC and possibly even N.

I don't think transferring in these 2 situations make sense either. Firms will evaluate his GPA taking into account his 1L school. I don't think think he would get an appreciable boost by transferring to CLS.

I do agree that if he wants academia he should transfer to Chicago. From my limited understanding of what academia entails, it seems like he would benefit from the smaller class size and more robust clerkship numbers at Chicago.

If you frame your career goals as "Big Law -> Academia," you almost surely aren't going into academia. That's not how it works anymore.

I just want to build a nest egg and transition into something I actually want to do. If you know of a better path, I'm open to suggestions

No pettiness intended. Unfortunately while I've always been successful at school, I have never been great at planning ahead, having a clear direction, etc. I just rely on busting my ass
