Should I transfer out of La Verne Law?

Post by bluebooker159 » Wed Feb 08, 2017 1:07 pm

Hi all,

After my first semester at La Verne Law, I am in the top 10% of my class. I am deciding whether I should transfer to a better school, particularly to a school in the LA or OC area. What are my chances of being able to transfer, and which schools typically consider La Verne Law students?

Thanks!

Going to be a crapshoot. I'd apply to UCLA,USC, maybe GULC and see what happens. Not sure it would be worth it to transfer to like UC-Irvine or something. Not sure how competitive you'd be at Berk.

Maybe some other Cal people who transferred can give insights to what schools place well in OC/LA.

Try Chapman in Orange or Southwestern in LA. Both are far superior to Laverne.

Good god... 35% employment rating. OP, I'd say get out immediately, but how much are you paying?

full price is only $27k/yr, at least.

Lol.

Southwestern's stats are on par, if not worse, than La Verne.

Transferring is going to depend on what you want to do in the future and how much you're currently paying at La Verne.

The gist of it is, if you want to do BigLaw, def transfer to a school with a higher ranking. If you want to do PD/DA/Solo work, then apply to transfer and once you get accepted, use that as leverage to get (more?) money out of La Verne.

Are you on a scholarship? If not, then you should apply to USC and UCLA. La Verne's employment statistics are bad and UCLA/USC will position you to actually obtain full-time employment as a lawyer.

Well Whittier Law just went under and is not accepting any more students. With a bar passage rate of 22%, Laverne looks better.

27K tuition for a school that gets only 30% of its students employed still sounds terrible. UGeorgia is $19K for in-state tuition and the top 10-15% rake in ATL biglaw jobs. You should 100% do anything but stay there

OP, have you considered Loyola?

I knew three people who transferred there from a school similar to La Verne (that’s been named in this thread) so I know Loyola takes them. They each had a “positive” outcome. (By positive, I mean passed the bar and obtained full time employment at law firms, though I’m unsure of their salaries and debt).

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.
