Transfer Options from a TT school??
First, when is the optimal time to put in a request to transfer? Can an application submitted in march still make it? On the GW website it said until June, but I'm guessing that's just "technical" and submitting that late makes it nearly impossible. I understand there's EA, but assuming I didn't want to do that, and most schools don't have that, when is the optimal time?
Anyway, I'm not at all sure I would want to transfer, and it's more of a pipe-dream due to perhaps some unsolved ego issues, but I'm pondering it. I'm currently on an 80% schol, and posted a first semester at about top 15% of the class, with a GPA of 3.550. Dean's list cutoff (top 20%) was at 3.400 so I recon I'm around top 15%... What are the odds of me getting into GW, or is Georgetown too far out of reach? (And does it help that I made the waitlist to GW for 1L last year?)\
Additionally any thoughts? My school is ranked around 60, and it's possible that I'll end up practicing here, but a combination of wanting a more valuable degree plus wanting to spend some time in a different city is making me consider this possibility.
Thanks! Any help would be great.

I wouldnt transfer to GW under any circumstance - unless you were just dying to be in DC or had a legitimate family reason to be there now, rather than two years from now.
Also, May/June is typical time to apply, and march isn't a possibility for most schools. Only a few schools open their applications before May-June. Typically, you need a full year worth of grades (with the exception of the ED schools - GULC, Vandy, UofC, etc.).
I think there was a thread that laid out the procedure/timeline not to long ago (too lazy to find link).

I wouldn't say you shouldn't transfer to GW under any circumstances. I don't think some people realize how terrible TTs can be.
That said, you should aim higher than GW. If you can maintain your grades, or even bump them up a little bit, you have a good shot at GULC. If you finish 15% for the year, you'll get into schools into T20-GULC range with about a 50% chance of getting into GULC.

Not sure, but I think that Georgetown offers financial aid grants to transfers.
Also, since you've indicated that you may want to live & work in your current city, it would be helpful to know your current law school. Especially so since you would be giving up an 80% scholarship &, possibly, law review membership.

I personally don't see you being a competitive applicant with your grades and standing for any top 20 school, and on an 80% scholarship, I think you are much better off just riding it out where you are. There's something to be said for graduating with as little debt as possible.

I 100% disagree. Aim higher than GW and target GULC and schools in that range. If you are in the top 15%-10% you have a shot (~50%) at the bottom half of the T14. Optimal time to transfer is at the end of your second semester, just have your letters ready to go and send off the applications as soon as you can. Keep plugging and get those grades up! There is something to be said for graduating debt-free but it is too early to know if you are facing a GW vs. TT decision. Also anecdotally, several kids in my transfer class (at a T14) were top 10% at their TT so there is that....clerk1251 wrote:I personally don't see you being a competitive applicant with your grades and standing for any top 20 school, and on an 80% scholarship, I think you are much better off just riding it out where you are. If aiming T 14 school and you are at a TT, then make sure you are at a top 5% rather than top 15%.
The lower ranked your current school is the higher your 1L GPA and rank has to be.
Else blanket T 30 transfers....

This thread is 6 months old, and it's July. I'm pretty sure the OP has already gone through transfer applications.DolnaRay wrote:If aiming T 14 school and you are at a TT, then make sure you are at a top 5% rather than top 15%.
