12 hours is the listed minimum for credit hours per semester. How easy is it to take fewer than that--say 11--for Fall of your 2L?prezidentv8 wrote:I promise no accuracy, but: http://www.law.duke.edu/curriculum/schedulefall20115782 wrote:Anybody know when the fall class schedule comes out?

Typical load is somewhere between 13 and 15 I'm guessing?

Re: Duke Class of 2013
12-15 is the no-approval-necessary range, but since it's a lot easier to count to 11 than 12 with the allocation of credit hours to classes at Duke, I'm wondering how difficult it will be to take fewer than 12 hours this fall.los blancos wrote:Typical load is somewhere between 13 and 15 I'm guessing?

Re: Duke Class of 2013
It's a lot easier to take 11 in Spring semesters since Wintersession credits can count towards course loads. For fall, you're probably going to need a pretty good excuse not to take a full 12. I suppose you could take 11 and say you plan to supplement with independent studies and ad hocs that won't get approved til fall, but what happens if you don't follow through?
Most people on a journal can try to get independent study credit for the note process, so definitely do that if you get on a journal.

Beskin seems to be loved by his sections...and BA w/ Gulati is intriguing.

What classes fill up? Should I just count a 40 person capped fed courts as impossible? I was thinking of doing 16 units, but have since decided that is probably not a sane choice.

Fed Courts has a reputation for being one of, if not the most difficult class in law school, in part because it attracts a lot of highly motivated clerkship hopefuls. I'd save it at least until the spring so it doesn't interfere with the job search.Reedie wrote:What classes fill up? Should I just count a 40 person capped fed courts as impossible? For that reason, I might not even touch it until 3L. I'm not sure how important it is for my career goals but I figure I might do it spring 2L IF I think I'm competitive for SLIP or something like that.
I'm probably going to do 13 lawl skool credits + an undergrad class.
Still waiting to see if they're going to add Appellate Practice, Prosecutorial Ethics, and any Criminal Procedure classes.

Re: Duke Class of 2013
Can any upperclassmen who have taken Appellate Practice comment on the workload / difficulty of the course? It seems like it will be LARW all over again, except this time the oral argument will be graded... and in front of a real judge. I am interested in litigation and genuinely want to take this course, but I'm afraid it will swallow up a lot of my time while offering little benefit to my professional goals.
Thoughts?

Anyone taken Principles of Commercial and Bankruptcy Law with Schwarcz or know anything about him or the class generally? His resume is frighteningly impressive and I hear he can be harsh with students.

If you want to do the Dean's Cup, take Appellate Practice. If you don't, don't take Appellate Practice.beantowngunnahh wrote:Can any upperclassmen who have taken Appellate Practice comment on the workload / difficulty of the course? I'm still kind of surprised there aren't any CrimPro classes offered...
So far:
Evidence
App Practice
Corporate Crime
Waitlists for two of those, but I think I have a decent shot. Not sure I want Appellate Practice - thinking about doing a clinic.

You can only do a clinic if you have taken ethics. I think some of them will let you do it as a co-requisite, not sure, but I haven't heard of anyone doing one before Spring 2L year. And be aware that they are typically a lot of work.los blancos wrote:I'm still kind of surprised there aren't any CrimPro classes offered...

Yeah, I think the one I'm considering allows doing the ethics course concurrently. I may just wait till spring, though.Bosque wrote:You can only do a clinic if you have taken ethics. "In addition, within a reasonable time of receipt of the grades from the instructor and after January 25 for the Fall semester and June 15 for the Spring semester, the Registrar will report such grades to the students on the electronic system utilized by the university (e.g. the SISS web-based system currently)."
