Re: Loyola (LA) 2013
Hey everyone -- note that orientation mailers went out late last week (IIRC) and registration materials this week. If the admission results mailings were any indication, some east coast people may not have received first the packet yet (and might not receive it until next week?)
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO REGISTER ONLINE FOR ORIENTATION BY 5PM THIS COMING MONDAY 8/2/10 (according to LLS) OR YOU MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.
Seems kind of harsh considering how late the mailer went out, so here's the link they give, which is non-responsive some of the time (so try back later if it's not working):
https://technology.lls.edu/orientation
(don't forget the "s" after the http, or you'll get a connection timeout; it doesn't redirect.)
you'll need your student ID number.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
And, all you Section 1 people: you may have to get up early, but you'll miss the worst of the traffic both coming and going. I feel for the Section 2 people: you get Levenson for Crim, but you're on campus until 5:30 some days. Bleh.

Re: Loyola (LA) 2013
It's possible to order all of your books (except R+W) now and save some money. I ordered mine online through a combination of Half, Amazon and eBay and I only spent about $250 (including the recommended texts). This would have cost me roughly $850 new.
Go to the Loyola Barnes & Noble website: http://lls.bncollege.com
Click "Textbooks" and then select the proper "Term", "Department", "Course" and "Section".
A list of all your required and recommended textbooks will be there, with ISBN numbers.

Did you buy used? Were the books covered in highlight markings and stuff?tortbook wrote:It's possible to order all of your books (except R+W) now and save some money. Yes, all the books I bought are used. Only 2 of the 9 books I bought have highlighter marks, and the highlight marks are minimal (a handful of cases). The other 7 books are clean.thepaintrain wrote:Did you buy used? Section 3 here.
How did you get to nine books? I only saw casebooks--5 of em. Or does LRW have 4? I haven't looked at those yet.

I hope it isn't 4 more books cuz I'm going broke buying these books. I'm kinda OCD and scared of used books. Always spent way more than necessary cuz of this...Duralex wrote:Section 3 here.

My Crim and Contracts both have 3 books each: 3 req and 3 rec. I don't have LRW yet b/c the sections won't be assigned until orientation next week.Duralex wrote: How did you get to nine books? I only saw casebooks--5 of em. Or does LRW have 4? I haven't looked at those yet.

1) Any opinion or argument for used vs. rented textbooks? Never done the latter and know nothing about it.tortbook wrote:It's possible to order all of your books (except R+W) now and save some money. 2) Is there any issue that the BN list of books is inaccurate or going to change between now and next week?

1) Have never rented. I have trouble parting with books I've spent a long time with. I'm also kind of hard on them--I'd rather just sell the one's I'm not keeping back in whatever condition they're in than obsess over some rental agreement.
2)They had better not, unless they're going to pick up my Amazon tab.

Re: Loyola (LA) 2013
1) B&N touts that rented books save you "more than 50%" compared to buying new. However, take for example my Property casebook: $133 new on B&N, so roughly $54 rented (with a 60% discount off of the new price). I recently bought this book used online for $20. If I'm able to sell it at the end of the year for $10, then I've only paid $10 for it altogether.FLATLiNE wrote:1) Any opinion or argument for used vs. rented textbooks? Thanks and thanks (dura & tort). I'll see if I can do some quick shopping online and buy everything today, used, not rented and hopefully it'll get here in a reasonable time period.

Well, my section (2) just took our first exam. It was a civ pro midterm. Anyone else in my section, or has anyone else taken an exam that counts toward their final grade?
