UConn Class of 2013

Post by Burger in a can » Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:30 am

Well, I guess since I started the UConn waiting thread, I'll go ahead and start this one too. If you're headed to UConn in the fall I'm proud to say that I'll see you there!

See you there, Burger!

Will you be attending the ASD? If so, are you going to the breakfast with the Dean? I am trying to decide whether to go or not. I don't wanna be the only one there

Yeah I think it might be really awkward to have breakfast with the Dean all alone. :D I think I will be at ASD, and if I go I will definitely have breakfast with the Dean. I hope there are waffles!

Seriously though, you won't be the only one there. :)

I'll be there in the fall but with conflicting appointments on the 10th, I doubt I'll be at ASD.

This might be a dumb question, but the admitted student site says this:
Our commitment deadline is April 15, 2010. You must complete and return the Notice of Intention form and a non-refundable deposit of $250.00 by this date.
Can anyone tell me where this Notice of Intention form might be, and maybe more specific information about sending the deposit? Thanks!

I received mine with the acceptance letter. The heading is UCONN SCHOOL OF LAW, Notice of intention. It should be returned with the first $250 deposit by April 15- they send a receipt a few days later saying that your spot is secured.

Oh, you mean this bright blue piece of paper that has been sitting next to my computer all week? I am an idiot.

This is what happens when you take the initiative- you get stuck doing everything :)

I think they presently only have UCONN law class 2012/2013 (to incorporate both programs)- so there's definitely a void . . .

i'm sitting on offers between usc (not sure about extra $) and uconn (in-state all three years.. not sure about extra $) right now

i'm assuming that usc sticker will put me at around $180K debt.. and uconn with just in-state will put me at around $90K debt

usc offers more prestige and a better shot at BIGLAW.. but is in LA, which i've heard nothing but horror stories about the necessities of car ownership AND the east-coast portability of the degree is marginal (also hearsay)

uconn is my comfort zone (i'm finishing my UG here, pretty much a CT lifer, my family is in the tri-state area).. BUT i'm concerned about the job security the degree provides. I think I'd be comfortable with a salary hovering around six figures if my total debt was $90K.

as far as my career prospects.. i'm interested in government work if my finances allow.

AHH. regardless I'll be in at attendance at ASD 4/10 since USC deposit date is 5/1. I look forward to bludgeoning the dean with questions.

No thanks, but I would certainly consider joining one if someone else starts it up! I'm not sure I'm ready for that kind of internet exposure yet... :)

Yeah, I figured. lol I'm also not ready to give up my anonymity! I guess we'll have to wait for some non-TLSer to do it.

I know people are always asking about what books they should read before 1L, and I saw that Uconn posted this summer reading list on the "New Admits" page of their website, so I thought I'd share:

Way too broke and in debt from grad school to buy a house lol Since you seem to be familiar with the area, is Asylum Ave to the east of campus dangerous? I know you all have said that to the east of campus is the area with crime and whatnot. But there seem to be a few apartment buildings on Asylum, so just wondering. Please let me know!

It's a good time to buy, my sister presently lives in Vernon and they are looking at houses in West Hartford, lots of good deals. If you're not already in a house (and underwater on your mortgage), so much the better! If you're an old man at 28, I'm a decrepit geriatric at 33.

I just received my Financial Aid award letter. Do you all know if grants need to be repaid? It says "Law Tuition Remission Grant OS." I'm assuming OS = out of state? I'm also eligible for work study. But it doesn't give details on how many hours a week I'd have to work or anything like that :S Anyone know anything about that?? I was hoping to NOT have to work while in law school, as I know first year is mega important and stressful as it is.

There should be a definition of the aid at the very bottom of the letter? Based on my undergrad, I'm inclined to say no, they do not need to be repaid.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
