Student Loan Refinance

Post by BasilHallward » Tue Jun 25, 2019 2:56 pm

Given the Fed's recent suggestions that the foot will be taken off the gas pedal, are there any rates currently out there that make refinancing worthwhile? I'm currently at about 6% for my federal and state loans? Anyone locking in around 3.5 or 4%?

First Republic if you qualify. 5-year at 1.95%. But not sure what they’re now.

Unfortunately, I'm not located within First Republic's service area.

I got the FRB 15-year at 2.75%. I don't think you can get anywhere close to that now. Best I've seen is in the 4-5% range which gets into "not worth it" territory imo.

On a related note, shouldn't ya'll be waiting till the next presidential election (or at least the primaries) for the slim possibility that the president magically makes all our loans disappear?

Edit: accidental anon.

That would be amazing, but I am outside of FRBs allocations. They would not help me at all. Any one able to convince them otherwise?

I have heard good things about SoFi.

Keep in mind that doing a refi may strip you of all the deferral options you get with federal loans. You might run the numbers and see how much you save and what the options are if you end up jobless or unable to work due to some random injury or illness.

Straight out of law school might be another reason to wait a bit before you refi just to make sure the job you took will work out for basically the same reason as above.
